MC preamp options, opinions?

Hi all-
I'm looking at amplification methods for a moving coil setup. I'm looking at the HypnoToad active preamp as well as just using Lundahl LL1681 transformers. I guess my biggest question is, do I really need an active preamp with RIAA correction?
I'm going to be using this with my Fisher 800b, so I think there is already a correction circuit in the phono input.

What are the plus and minuses of each type of amplification? I'd like to hear anyone's experience with these methods.

I usually use my TT with my Yamaha C6 preamp which has a built-in MC input, so the Fisher is a new setup to me.

If your Fisher has a good performing MM phono input then a step-up would work fine, as long as you match the step-up ratio to the specific LOMC cart you plan to use.
For me, the Hynotoad preamp is a better option because it gives me the flexibilty to use it with a variety of LOMC's, regardless of output or impedance, just swap a few resistors.
It sounds great too!
 
Thanks Jim, I'm aware of the matching that has to take place with the cartridge. K&K audio has a nice table of resistor values for different impedances.

The switches on Hypnotoad are really nice as you say for quick switchover. Does this design have an RIAA circuit, or is it just a preamp? That was one of my big questions.

AFAIK, all of Phillip's pre's have RIAA equalization. Last time I looked, his MM preamp had the switches but not the MC preamp? I haven't been keeping up with his latest designs though so I could be wrong. I've been enjoying my Hypno-clone too much to be looking at alternatives!
 
go passive; the Silk SUTs are very nice sounding and quite reasonably priced.

If you want to go all-active, I am quite happy with the JLTI (Just Listen to It) that I am now using. I have the original version, purchased used. The current model is much prettier - but also considerably more expensive.
 
It looks like you have to buy the Silk transformers direct? No pricing anywhere on their web site.

I guess I should have mentioned that I'd like to keep the price under $100. The Hypnotoad is looking pretty good at around $50 from Digikey.
