MC240 Production Information Request

SystemError

New Member
Good afternoon y'all.

My name is Nick and I've recently begun a clean-up and rehabilitation of my family MC240 (I have a thread in the tube amp section of this forum that provided much more detail on this adventure).

I come to the McIntosh sub-forum for some information that I'm hoping someone here can provide.

I would like to know as many niche details about this model as possible, and my google-fu is turning up very little.

What I have learned is this:

The MC240 was produced from 1960-1969, allegedly had three different production runs/series, the serial number can NOT accurately date the production, and the line output and posts got deleted/relocated at some point.

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam at some point in the past, but I'm new here so any information that can contribute to my body of knowledge about this amp would be much appreciated. Again, I'm looking for any factual information (links to literature would be great - I've already acquired the factory manuals that AK has available) about the MC240 that would be of interest to someone who has found themselves fortunate to have one early in life, but with no extensive knowledge of their past or collective history. I get the impression that they are fairly highly regarded, but I would like to know why and how that came to be.

Thanks everybody,
Nick

If you haven't already done so I would bookmark these two sites. Also if you email Roger Russell he will respond with an answer.

Here is Berner's site. Good information here as well.

Ah beautiful! As best I can figure, a lot of the older-style websites don't have the traffic and linking to bump them to the top of search engines, despite the fact that they are much more relevant than the fluff that shows up first. Fortunately, there are kind people like yourself who are willing to share. Thanks!

Interestingly, after perusing Berner's site, my serial # is not congruent with the serials listed in the model profiles. I have a XXXD5 serial number, which is in the mid-series serial range, but a late series chassis as identified by the photos and location of components... Any idea why this would be the case?

Knowing McIntosh, they probably started introducing the late model revisions earlier so there is a good chance there was a mixture of serial numbers as they burned off old stock and started working the new stock. Berner's site is good, but doesn't commonly take into account the small deviations that occur during production. I myself have a late model one with S/N 10G33 so they definitely switched around that time. I just need to find a way to put the serial number back on it. The number came off when I derusted the chassis. Good thing I took pics first.

There were 3 versions of MC 240 - Early - Mid - Late

MID series MC 240 was manufactured from 8/1961 thru 9/1965 and serial number runs 100D1 - 999D9 according to Berners.

Yours is a mid series of which total production is 6,644. Total MC 240 prod - 16,896.

Roger that! I can see that my serial puts it cleanly in the middle of the mid-series serial numbers, but my chassis has:

"2. Tube cage has small round openings. 3. Speaker terminal strips are in the center of angled front. 4. One octal receptacle on angled front. 5. Fuse is on the angled front." (Directly from the late gen description)

And mine looks EXACTLY like the late gen/nothing like the mid gen.

I see your point.

Looking back and forth between the pictures you posted and the examples shown by Berners, I did notice that the front panel lettering is slightly different between yours and the "LATE" version: Yours has small arrows on the left of the front panel for the A/C nomenclature like the MID version but the single octal of the late version.

May have to check with Larry on this one...

*Too bad you lost the serial number during the cleaning...make certain you note it somewhere.

Noted somewhere safe, and stamped on the inside of the chassis to boot!
