MC275 single/pair vs. MC75 pair ?

Back in the days of the McIntosh clinic road show, maintaining a Mac tube product was fairly easy. Just bring it to them when they were in town and they'd bench test it and freshen it up for you.
Nowadays, I dunno how otherwise nontechnically oriented owners keep their tubed Mac gear up to peak performance.
 
The new MC75s came before the current MC275 MKVI as the MC75s were part of the 2009, 60th anniversary system. The MC75s are based on what was learned in MC2301. The new MC75s are made because music lovers and reviewers love them.
In the 2009 Hi-Fi News review they measured 106/97 watts at 8/4 ohms, 115 watts dynamic, at < 0.1% THD, 99.4 dB SN ratio, with a frequency response of -0.1 to -3.4db, 20 to 100 KHz. Very few transistor amps will equal this. Ken Kessler felt the combination of the C22 and MC75s did the best job ever of driving LS3/5a speakers which are about 80Db sensitive.
Of course a bigger amp will drive any speaker louder but the MC75s can deliver a sound that you may find to quote KK, "mesmerizing, inspiring, invigorating".

Back in the old days the MC75 had better specs than the 275. That was because of the power supply and transformer execution. Today I wouldn't have a clue. My thought is if 75 watts won't do the job you might as well jump to the 2301 which is a more sophisticated amp. Gaining 3 db never did it for me. Having run 240's and 275 in mono was never the improvement I needed. Quantity isn't the answer for me, Quality is. If Solid state hadn't come along I would probably have 4 MC 3500's. They definitely had the quality to go along with the quantity. No make that 8 3500's.

I might add an additional MC275 in the future.

Same here - my 275V has been powering my 250Ti's for 3 years now and I've not felt the need to add more power. My wife likes to embrace her big hair 80s self and crank it up on occasion and we've found that the much more gentle roll off when it hits "the wall" is far more pleasing than the big transistor amps I had in the past. It happens at a lower volume too which is great for us preserving what's left of those old ears :-).

It's a great match !

What exactly are you referring to that was learned with the 2301s?
 
MC2301 is the first Mc tube amp with Sentry Monitor. This was applied to the Mc75 as well as some other tricks.
