Hi,

May i ask for your comments or possibly someone has tried this...

MC275 power with MA6900 preamp section

Will this do justice to the MC275?

Background:

I might be able to get a good deal on an MC275 but no budget for a preamp at the moment...But i do have an MA6900...

Looking forward to your comments and suggestions...

also if i may ask, what standalone preamp would you recommend with the MC275...

Hi Arien,

Greetings from the Monterey Bay of California. You should be able to do a good job with the '6900 as a preamp. It will drive the '275 just fine - we're talking about a current model '275, right?

Of course, you're not really getting the best value out of the '6900 but this is a good opportunity to compare the '275's power stage to the '6900.

Why not just give it a try and report back here what your ears tell you.

On the recommended preamps, you've got lots of choices. For tube, I'd suggest the C2200 or C220 depending on how many inputs you need or in connections with a Home Theater installation - the C2200 has lots of features there. For SS, I'd suggest you take a look at the C45/C46 although I understand Mac is rolling the product line there a bit. The cool part of the C45 is that you can get a hold of a TM-1 tuner module and turn it into a preamp/tuner. The C46 has the 5-band equalizer. All have lots of inputs and phono preamps. Of course, you can step up to more expensive preamps but that's where I'd recommend anyone start.

What's the comparable standalone preamp as what's on the MA6900, is it the c46?

Thanks Chuck, that's good news because that is what's being offered to me....I've read that both the MK IV and MK V are vey versions compared to the one before them...

The MC275MkIV is what you've shown. Excellent amp. Wish my current speakers had been happy with mine. The MA6900 preamp section will work just fine driving the MC275. But, would think that your MA6900 is worth as much or more on the used market than a C2200 (which, like Chuck, I also used with my MC275s). If you can live without the blue meters, then you could also consider a C220, which is not quite as nice as a C2200 or C2300.

Sonically, I would say the MC275 is 'smooth'. Wonderful sound from bottom to top. Its only failing, which is true of most all tube amps, is that it runs out of steam in the lower bass with some full-range speakers due to its 75wpc. I found it did a particularly great job on monitor speakers.

Get the one MC275 IV now, save your pennies, and get another later, and run them in mono for 150 watts.

I have one set of speakers and two amps. I switch between the two amps with a A/B switch I built. Also, the C2200 has two other outputs. I use the main output for the MC352, and one of the other switchable outputs for the MC275.

The AB Switch box uses a 12V dc relay to switch the positive and negative connections of each speaker between amps.

Thanks MX117, i'd like to keep my MA6900, probably save some money to buy the partnering preamp for the MC275...btw, i have 2 pairs of speakers, one is Dynaudio Contour S1.4 and the other is Proac Response 1SC. My plan is to use the MA6900 with the Dyn S1,4 and the MC275 with the 1SCs...At the moment, the MA6900 drives either of the speakers quite well and I love how they both sound....but i'm still curious and wanting to venture into tubes and don't want to go wrong hence the choice of Mc tubes...thanks again

Hi MX117, yes i've read that the 1SCs sings very well with tubes rather than SS hence the itch to try it:)
