Hello everyone, first post here.
Can anyone please let me know if the 2205 amp is a good amp to enter into the Mcintosh world of audio?. I know it is a somewhat old model but there is one in my area and can buy it for a reasonable price.
What I like to know from anyone whom might have used one or has one is how well they sound compared to other Mcintosh amps, how durable are they, etc, etc, any information on this model is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The MC2205 is one of my personal favorites. It delivers over 240 watts of power (even though it is rated at 200 wpc) It is a very dynamic, smooth yet detailed amplifier. I always have customers that cannot part with that amp even after 20+ years of listening to it! You cannot go wrong with that amp!
 
The 2205 is the amp that got me started on Mac gear over 25 yrs ago. Been hooked ever since. Owned it for over 20. It was great driving a pair of Klipsch LaScala's. You won't regret it. Built like a tank, and about as heavy.

As a follow up I would like to know if a pre amp is necessary? The 2205 looks like it has volume control so is there any additional benefit to running a signal through a pre amp first?
If the answer is yes does it make a difference if the pre amp is SS or tube?

It works best with Mc pre-amps (IMHO) but will work with any preamp solid state or tube. I am running a Mx 135 thru 2 2205's ...both in bridge mode and I love em. You couldn't pry them out of my cold dead hands. I wouldn't pass the amp by if its in good physical shape and everything works. Expect to pay any where from 800-1800 depending on condition, location, retail, private owner etc.

If your running more than 1 source or are considering it in the future ,then you should look into a pre amp as well. As far as Mc preamps go, the C2200 gets high marks around here as does the MX 119. If full blown theater is what your after than a MX 135 and several Mc 2205's would be good.

With Mc, the sky is the limit...

I agree with what has been stated I am the fourth owner of my particular 2205 and I love it. recapped it recently and it will go at least another 30 yrs and then to my son !
