Mcintosh vintage amps - 752, 2100, 2105, 2505 which one if only one?

Hi gang,

I have the opportunity to get one free Mcintosh amp. My choices are:

MC752, MC2100, MC2105, MC2505

I would probably use it to drive a pair of Focal 1038BE speakers (93db sensitivity, 8ohm nom, 40-400w recommended amp power) which are currently being driven by a Denon AVR.

If you guys could pick one for your taking, which would you go with and why? They are all in very good to excellent condition with only one owner. I see a couple of sellers on Ebay who have full cap and bulb refurb kits to make sure they're in tip-top shape.

I’d pick the MC2105 as it has the most power, blue meters, autoformers, and is worth the most out of the models you listed.

To me, the MC752 just doesn’t look like a classic McIntosh, even though it’s the newest out of the list. The 2505 is a lower power, similar vintage version of the 2105, and the 2100 is just the meter-less version of the 2105.

So, to me, no brainer: MC2105 all the way.

There is a lot to unpack here but I will try........

I agree in large part with @ramjet - don’t depend on a kit. Doing a quick search on the 2105, looks like there’s a 4-5 PCB’s with ~12 smaller discrete caps, 2 big power supply caps, and a multi-can cap.

If you have good soldering experience, download a service manual and search for internal pics to give you an idea of what’s involved. If it looks very straightforward, you can *consider* doing it yourself, but IMO, if you need detailed instructions to make sense of it, it’s not a good idea to take it on yourself.

There’s not a lot of caps, but even if you have good soldering skills, you need to have confidence you can get to the boards. A couple look to be plug in’s, so those are probably not bad. Some look to have a bunch of wires attached, so the question is whether you can replace the caps either a) without removing the wires, b) feel confident you can remove the wires, keep track of where they go, and can put them back correctly. If the wire pull off, it may not be bad. If you have to desolder them and resolder them, again, you should feel very confident in that.

Need to also think about how you’re going to handle the can cap too (4 caps in one can) - will you get a new can cap from a place like Hayseed Hamfest, will you take out the old one and re-stuff it with discrete caps, or will you use discrete caps under chassis (I.e. use discrete caps, without trying to fit them into the old can). For the two big power supply caps, you likely need to know the allowable size range, lead/screw spacing, what’s insulated on the OEM caps, etc. You can’t just get any big caps with the same uF and voltage specs and expect they will be plug and play.

There’s also some references to a runaway thermal condition that you might want to make some mods to prevent.

I’m all for people doing as much as they’re comfortable with to save $$. I do that myself, realizing that while, all things being equal, it would be better to have an experienced tech run a lot of tests with distortion analyzers and other test gear to give it a stamp of approval. But, nevertheless, I choose to do the work myself esp if I’m starting with a piece with no known issues except old caps and take the risk of not doing a bunch of bench tests afterwards. Because I can do the actual work myself, which saves hundreds of $.

BUT, I wouldn’t recommend anyone use a McIntosh as a first project or hope they can get through it without having a concrete plan of exactly what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it. The downsides are too high, and there’s a real risk of taking a working piece of gear with old caps and damaging it and having to go to a tech to try and recover it from the dead.

One way I would think about this is: If you’re getting this for free, even if you spend a few hundred $ to have it done right by someone with experience, you should still come out well ahead. If the cosmetics of the amp are very good and it’s fully restored and made robust against any possible danger issues like thermal runaway, it should be a $1500+ amp no problem. So, say, $200-400 to get to that point is pretty cheap.

Just be sure, if you go down that path, that you’re picking a proven, reliable tech that you don’t have to worry about doing shoddy work or messing up your amp.
 
Thank you for the replies guys and I appreciate the honest feedback. I'm watching a multi-part re-cap/resto series on Youtube and the guy makes it look very easy relatively speaking with clear audio and video. I am located in the Bay Area, California as well and do not want to ship such a large and heavy amp for fear of damage. I'll definitely think this through but in the meantime, but any professional Mc specialist recs here in the Bay Area captouch?

In any case, here she is. What a heavy beast! Looks like Mcintosh revised the MC2105 through its 10 year (approx.) lifespan.

rack handles are aftermarket... Knobs for from later MC amp. Glass looks cracked?? If it works Id use it until it doesnt work properly. I wouldnt hook up very expensive speakers to amp until its recapped however. If you have to ship it, spend the extra money for correct shipping carton from McIntosh or AC. I will survive shipping in either of those boxes! Enjoy your new free amp!
 
Thanks for the suggestions. Does McIntosh still make vintage amp specific boxes? The glass is not cracked, just refecting off plastic wrapper on cutting mat. I like the look of the rack handles so I think they'll stay but who rack mounts such a heavy thing?!

I have a pair of Focal Electra 1038BE speakers ($14k msrp) I planned to hook them up to but not until the amp gets refreshed.

There's also a metal foil Mcintosh Performance Certified sticker on the top which is dated 12-11-1976. I wonder if it was sent in for updates... Serial on mine begins with AH as well.
 
Since I also have a center channel (40-200w), if I could pick up the MC2100 and run it in mono (bridged 210w) would this be ideal just for shiites and giggles? Right now my Denon X3300 AVR is powering my LCR setup.
 
Only if the preamp has a center (L+R) channel output. On a MC2100 it's designed for mono parallel - not bridged.
 
I rebuilt my MC2105 and didn't find it very difficult. Granted, it wasn't my first rebuild. However, before I started I read all I could on Audio Asylum and AudioKarma regarding refurbishing the amp. Once I had a plan I ordered the parts and did the rebuild. I will say that on projects like this a desoldering tool like the Hakko FR301 is worth it's weight in gold.
 
Lman, I was actually planning to purchase the Hakko F301 (Made in Japan) desoldering gun as I love me some quality tools. Other than R&R parts, did you have the know-how on testing each circuit and troubleshooting (decent electronics knowledge/background) or just went off of forum wisdom and lots of research?

62caddy - thanks so it looks like I need to hunt for a preamp. I might be able to get an SAE P102 preamp but I'm sure it needs a good looking over as well.

Oh here are photos of the very dusty MC2100 which has been sitting for who knows how long. Pretty darn good condition! Of course there's some very light peppered rusting and around the fuse-socket, probably inevitable considering the age.

I gathered as much information as I could regarding upgrades and went to work. I had previously restored a number of other pieces, all tube, so I had experience troubleshooting but I have no background in electronics, I just sling solder. The nice thing about working on power amps is that they fairly simple as compared to an integrated or a receiver. Read up, know what you are going to change and take your time, rushing or working when your tired usually leads to mistakes.
