Melodiya Russian Pressings

qdrone

Music is my mistress
I picked up a few @ a thrift store this weekend, basicaly Shostikovich and just wondering where Russian pressings stand as far as vinyl quality. Says Melodiya/Angel on them and they were in mint shape for a dollar a disc. They were pressed in Soviet Union.

Depends on who pressed the vinyl. For the most part, I have found that records made in the former Soviet bloc countries, as well as Spain and Portugal, to be of very low quality. Cheap vinyl and apparently poor quality control abound. Sound quality was poor as well, like an Edison recording. There were some nice ones, however, this was more the exception than the rule. Even with audio restoration software, it takes a real effort to get something to sound like it should.

My general opinion of the URSS pressed Melodiya runs from good to excellent. In the 70's, there was a joint venture between Melodiya and EMI. The titles you mentioned belong to this series. Some of the titles I've got under this series are pressed in the USA or in the UK, France or Italy. The Angel ones do not seem to be the best pressed, IMHO, as compared to the European counterparts (I love the pressing and album artwork of some of the Italian EMI issues).

You want the ones that were pressed for high-level Party members, not the ones that were sold in stores to regular people.

The Russian recordings could be very well done. They used tube equipment and simple miking much later than in the West.

The lp's I have from Melodiya are not that good. It all sounds 'metalish', like Pilopros said, like an Edison recording.
Maybe the high party members were lucky butI doubt it. The recording would be te same but the pressing could be better.
Funny to have a few but I never play them.

Thanks Guiller
