RE: UPnP (DLNA) streaming to my Onkyo.

Mezzmo transcodes Apple Lossless, and FLAC files to either MP3 or s16be. 16be is the default have no idea what the spec's are on s16be, and search on the net doesn't come up with the info I am looking for. Basically what is s16be how does it compare to a WAV file, or other lossless formats. I would prefer for transcode to a WAV in this case but that is not an option with Mezzmo.

I've never heard of s16be. If you're looking file an audio file converter try free audio converter. It's open source freeware. It and EAC are my go to apps for ripping CD's and converting files. Check the link below.

Doesn't Mezzmo work with FLAC files? I can't see using a file format that doesn't have universal support.

Doesn't sound like a winning strategy to me - going from FLAC and ALAC to MP3 is def a step downward!

if the Mezzo shows it converts to FLAC, there's no need to go anywhere else!

I have the db poweramp converter with will convert anything to anything else.

Mezzmo does not do FLAC. But it does everything else very well. I am going get Asset UPnP, using Paypal this time, it is still the best UPnP client for music. When I go to the DLNA tab in the Network option on the Onkyo I can have multiple UPnP clients. Asset directly transcodes all of the lossless formats to a WAV file.

I am glad s16be is as much of a mystery to you as it is to me.

Thanks hjames I was looking at the same page before I purchased Mezzmo and it seems to do what I want FLAC, APE, and Apple Lossless to a WAV file but you don't see that in the transcoding section there must be somewhere I have not been to set that up.

s16be is a PCM signed 16 bit big-endian format Which I now know is a type of WAV file. If I understand it this is an IBM flavored WAV file.

I did some checking and I believe the s16be format is WAV format for ARM RISC processors. Invented in 1991 for the Acorn (genesis of ARM) and used in a lot of Eidos games. s16be stands for signed 16 bit big endian PCM.

The Onky probably uses an ARM proc for processing which I assume uses big endian byte order, as opposed to Intel which uses little endian.

Does it play on your Onky?

Anyway, Asset is still the best DLNA server. Everything spoon makes is great.

Thanks I'll see if it does play on the Onkyo, I suspect it does Mezzmo recognized it by model number as an attached device.

You are right about Asset, I am still pissed that spoon banned me from the support forums for telling him about US banks blocking the UK based payment service his uses as an the alternate to paypal.

If it does play, it would suggest that Asset would also use big endian WAV when sending to ARM based devices but maybe it displays a friendlier name for it like "WAV" :)

The banning is really wierd. I can't think of any rationale to support it.
