Mixing Tubes and Solid State Components

Hello All,

Would there be any issue with connecting a Conrad Johnson PV-12 pre-amp to a Parasound HCA 2200ii?
I need to power a pair of Vandy C2's and they need at least 100w to behave.
Thanks for any feedback and suggestions.

Thanks,
Nathanial

No, there's nothing wrong with mixing tube and SS equipment. In fact, it can give you the best of both worlds. The only issue that can arise is when a vintage (like 1950s) tube preamp with a very high output impedance is mated to a SS amp that needs a low-impedance drive. The PV-12 will not have this problem.

Have to side-step the idea that SS=bad and tube=good. Cover the basics first; as Zack mentioned, make sure the pre can drive the amp. Then there are lots of stuff to worry about in terms of execution and preference... :)

If you really want heresy, there are hybrid preamps and power amps out there, mixing tube and solid state in one box. My preamp is such a beast and it actually works quite well. Solid state regulated power supply, tubes for signal amplification, mosfets as current sources and output buffers.
