Mordaunt-Short MS25Ti : Anyone familiar?

Hi guys,
I've seen a pair of MS25Ti on sale and I was wondering if anyone was familiar with that particular model? I know MS has a good reputation and a few models come up more regularly than others (though they remain fairly rare), but I can't find much on this model: MS25Ti...

If someone is familiar with it, could we have a guess at the making years and what would be a fair price for them?

I'm not familiar with those, but I have a pair of MS100 Golds that I really like. They have a similar look to them. Can you audition them? If you are looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers they would be worth checking out.

I am with Kris. I have had a couple pair of Mordaunt Short speakers and they were both excellent.

Nice.
I know as long as I don't push my 100s too much, and feed them music that doesn't have a ton of bottom end, they sound wonderful. 50s/60s Blue Note type stuff is really enjoyable, even on top a cinder block/plywood shelf in my garage. I could see myself pairing them up with a sub someday. The cabinets are in rough shape, though. I think I might do a complete re-veneer with something really striking.

They are an often overlooked brand in the states. Great for guys buying, not so great if you want to sell.

Thank you guys! I'll give them a listen if they are still available...

How much do you think would be reasonable for them?

So true, and the same in Canada. I had never heard of MS when I found my pair at a thrift. I read the Made In Great Britain label, and they looked well made, so I took a chance(they were around $10). I set them up as a temp system on my garage workbench to sell a couple of turntables. One listen and I knew I got lucky. And they helped sell the tables, too.:D

It's impossible to put a value on something like that for me. I overpaid for my MS30i's by a large margin but I would do it again. Go listen, if they sound as good as I think they will.. offer what you feel they are worth. Resale is/would be tough so remember that when offering.

Well put.
I was thinking about what "value" I would put on 100 Golds if they were in good shape, and I was looking for bookshelf speakers, and I couldn't really. I know that if I were to put mine on the market along with the Minimus 7Ws I picked up from the same thrift, the 7Ws would get more attention, and probably net me more money. Which is kinda sad if you did a side by side comparison. There just isn't much talk about MS speakers.

Allright! Moved to $&S for money talk! Well, better mention actual figures then: The guy was originally asking 75$ for them, I ultimately paid 40$. As you guys were saying, it might not be a very popular brand when it comes to selling...

Anyhow, I got them home and gave them a little wash: cabinets are not in a so good state, a few scratches, but nothing serious, but one of them unfortunately has some sort of liquid damage. If it were an iPhone, warranty would be void for sure.... Anyway, I used a damp cloth for the bulk and q-tips for the more intricate work (like the tweeter that had some sort of sticky brownish stuff on it...). The veneer has a little water damage...

Let's talk sound now : boy does it sound good! I've only been listening to these speakers for about an hour and a half and I am very pleased (my neighbours might not be as impressed as I am though).

I started off with some Ratatat - LP3 to see what they were capable of in terms of oomph and how it would handle the very saturated electronic music that Ratatat makes. I can say that I was pleased: they do a very good job at not loosing any details even when the tracks are very saturated with heavy electronic bass and synthesised highs.

After that I listened to some Pink Floyd. I started off with Echoes, that rollercoaster of a masterpiece. The speakers give a very good rendition of the guitar (and the guitar in this song is everything) and Roger Waters voice is clear and bright, although not too bright. You can close your eyes and feel like you are in a submarine underwater at some point... (Though this might be only me)

"Hey You" showed again how the speakers were able in the Highs department, but I noticed that something was lacking in the bass: Although it might be that I was too excited and that the volume and Bass settings were too high, I felt the woofers were holding back in the kick drum... I turned down the bass setting a little bit...

In "The great Gig in the Sky", all the warmth of the wonderful Clare Torry's voice shone. It really is a delight to listen to this track at high volume when a speaker can deliver it right.

I moved on to some Massive Attack - Mezzanine for the very bassy, "atmospheric" and dark sound. You feel surrounded by Massive Attack's music and it can be quite demanding on a speaker at some point. The Mordaunt Short delivered; This album was created with the idea of incorporating different abstract sounds and everyday sounds and thus can easily fuse with whatever you are doing. I felt the MS didn't skew or overemphasized the highs or the lows or the mids and it was quite seamless.

Finally, I decided to give the 7th of Beethoven (by the BBC Philharmonic orchestra) a try. Still on this piece, actually. The sound is very detailed; the gentle flute and the big booms of the timpani are well placed and the soundstage in general is appreciable. I would say though that I found the brass to be a little thin at some point; athough I am willing to put this on the recording... On the other hand, I was able to clearly hear the little sounds that are not supposed to be in there but that you can't do without: the coughing, the page-turning, the keys being pushed...

Overall a great speaker, rich sound and good clarity. Very good treble, lacking overhead in the bass. Might not be the perfect choice for symphonic music, although really not disagreeable for a 2-way speaker. I would also steer clear of the rap and hip hop, but I am not a big fan, so...

I hooked them up to a NAD 7155 receiver, they will ultimately be hooked to a Rotel receiver. I might try to hook them to a NAD PE 2200 amp, but I really don't think it will be of great help...

Anyway, thank you guys for the comments, I am not disappointed by the MS!

I wish I had known they only wanted $75, I would have insisted you went immediately! I am very happy to hear you like them, MS builds a badass speaker.

had a few ms speakers ..they don't like reggae .. had to kick em out of the door ..
cant remember if i had them ones though ..
to be fair though expecting huge bass from little cabs isn't fair on them really .

Well done, tycobee. I'm glad you like them. And I'm also glad to see an MS thread get some interest, instead of tumbleweeds blowing through.:D

Since this is in D&S now, anybody have a clue what the MRSP was on these(or any others)? I seem to recall finding a British price for my 100s that converted into about $400 Canadian. But I'm not sure how accurate that would be based on the economic situation in the 80s, so it's just a guess.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy them for years. I put up a thread if you do any work on the cabs.

I have no idea what was the MRSP, nor do I know when these were manufactured. If anyone has an idea, I would like to hear it!

As for the work on the cabs, I'm not sure I will undertake that, I'm not quite sure how to do that and they really ain't that bad ;-)

I will bet you a dollar against a doughnut that the ferrofluid (used for cooling) has leaked out of your tweeter. I wouldn't play them long or loud until I had that checked out.

Thanks Michael ! !

I will check that out, but it did seem like a spillage of some sort of cola or, more likely, beer or a drink... The sticky brownish stuff was consistent with that kind of liquid and the patern as well.

I'll take that doughnut anytime! :D
