More AR 2AX Experiments

Over the Holidays I had settled into my new to me Fisher tube amp with 7591's putting out ~ 30 WPC. Sounded wonderful with my KLH 6's and JBL L-36's. There really is something magical about tubes.

Thought I'd throw my AR 2AX's at the Fisher. Very nice warm sound that I could imagine most users back in the day enjoying with the 2AX's.

Then switched over to my Sui 890DB amp (had been using this as pre). Immediately improved sound. These AR's as we already know love high output SS amps. Just a pairing made in heaven as are the KLH's with tubes :yes:

Shacky, that Fisher is NOT an integrated amp ... is it?

How does it's gain compare with your ss amp?

Nope
And too high

For byamping I'll need to use RCA with integrated pads to tone down signal to the Fisher.

But that will be for the 3a's once I get them back together. Carl did a beautiful job recreating spacer ring for my 3a woogers.

Shacky, I see 3 pots on the Fisher. Any chance you can attenuate the input with one or two of them??

Jerry,

I thought so too. But I asked Narodow and he said no. I guess they are for adjusting bias. He said best way is to use RCA cables within integrated attanuators. He has a set for me to try out.

This was a basic amp only unit out of a Fisher console. Sounds very sweet  :music: Can't wait to fix up my Wharfedale W70D MK II's to try with it. Always hear Wharfedales sing with tubes. I have the smaller W40D's that are same as what I grew up with. Realize now why my brither and I kept blowing woofers. Had it hooked up to Sony 6050 with ludness on constantly and bass ramped up to about 4 O'Clock. Sounded great but amp was likely clipping like heck.

W40D have 8" woofers same tweeter and one midrange. W70D's have 15" woofers, same tweeter and two different woofers. I've read they put out clean bass but nothing like the prodigious bass of the AR's. Going to recap and flip woofers - wool surrounds tend to sag.

Wife hates them :nono:

Shacky, any model numner on that Fisher?

I found the schematic for a Fisher SA-16 and it clearly has attenuation controls.

Gotta tel you again - I love my 2AX's

Had some quiet down time to really listen to my favorite setup - Sansui 890DB feeding these AR 2AX. Bass is just so incredibly fulfilling and "right". Hi's though rolled off are so enjoyable. And mids like butta

Bass bloom is just such a great experience with this setup. Pure magic :music:

Right know I'm rediscovering Pat Metheny Group Imaginary Day. I think of Pat Metheny Group as modern day Classical music.
