Most Underrated Album from the Mid-1980s

That Style Council LP sounds extremely well recorded.

Collins Cray and Copeland - Showdown
While it did win a grammy it never got the airplay it deserved. Usually when super groups try to record it rarely works out but in this case it comes across as authentic. They didnt try to out do each other instead they pushed and complemented each other and the respect they had for one another is evident. Was easily one of best blues albums of the 80s.

Thanks! It's a Sheffield Lab Matrix pressing. These tend to be very good quality.

There was a lot of great music at around that time, at least to my ears. I could probably name lots of lesser known, but great records that came out in those years. here are a few favorites:

minutemen - Why Does a man Start Fires and Double Nickels on the Dime Not really so obscure in many circles as they were very influential on a lot of the music of the time and though the 90s.

Lets Active - Cypress This band and particularly this record is a big favorite of mine. It has a bit of the same vibe as the early REM records (the leader of the band, Mitch Easter did some production work for them) and I would say that it's at least as good as anything they put out. If I had to pick just one "most underrated" from this time period, it would probably be this one.

DBs - Like This - A very cool power pop type of sound. Great melodies and production.

XTC - Skylarking After this album, I kind of lost interest in the band, but this was a very good effort by them...

Tom Verlaine - Flashlight Very much of an acquired taste, but one worth acquiring. His lyrics are cryptic and the music doesn't always have easy to follow melodies, but it all has a really compelling, really unique quality and this record was a good one by him.

Robyn Hitchcock- Fegmainia! This is first thing that I heard from this guy and still a favorite. Weird, whimsical songs, but very melodic and surprisingly accessible.

I dig Roxy Music and discovered them a few years before this album came out, when I bought their first, self titled album, just because the cover looked interesting and because it was in the cheap bin at the used record store I used to frequent. I didn't have a lot of love for this one though because it seemed so much tamer than the early stuff and just wasn't all that compelling to me. Because I'm such a fan of the band though, I finally picked up a copy of this one recently and though I don't love it like the older, weirder stuff, I do like it and can see what it was such a hit. I have to wonder though about the "underrated" part of it because it was so popular. I'm pretty sure that it's their best selling album and then by a pretty wide margin...

Saw them twice during that tour. John Lord was an animal.
I saw them on that tour as well. I like the band, but am not anything like a mega-fan and never heard that album (at least not allthe way through). I'll have to look for a copy. I have this double record LP of their early stuff called Purple Massages, which I really like. It's not quite as heavy as the stuff they got better known for, but has a prettier, almost progressive rock vibe to it...
I literally just finished reading this article on them, good stuff

I kind of liked this band, when they were more of a thing, in the late 80s and 90s. I like their warped surreal sense of humor and saw them live, which was a lot of fun... but I have to admit that to me they are kind of a "one joke band" and other than a song or two of theirs they don't really compel me to put on their records.
Mid 80s?
