So, you guys already know, I dig reggae. And, strangely enough, one of my favorites is not from Jamaica. Rather, he is from the lovely Clairmont, California.
David Lindley, aka, Mr. Dave, Mr. Puffy, Chuck the Whining Rasta, the Prince of Polyester, the Sultan of Sleaze, among many of his on-stage personalities. To this night, he became Chuck the Whining Rasta.
Lindley, if you're not familiar, has backed the best of the best of the 70's/80's and 90's, and onward. He is an amazing stringed instrument instrumentalist. He started in the 60's in a psychdelic band, Kaliedoscope Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Cosby Nash, Warren Zevon, Ry Cooder,.. many others, all had Dave laying down immense layers of color. His choice of instruments is not typical either, far from it. A lot of his instruments are mid-eastern in origin. He also plays a steel guitar, a pair of antique Weissenborn Koa Wood lap steel guitars, and is an amazing slide guitarist.
Musical presence in this recording? Yep. in oodles. This one will test your bass response!
Obnoxious screaming fans? Yep, they're there too.
They closed us in, and then started pouring alcohol down the throats of the impressionable. And, that raised the elevation to the roof.
I also promise you, that you will learn to hate this obnoxious woman, just as much as I do. Please know that I tried.
But, to the concert, and the song selection,... WOW!
I have recorded Lindley an extensive amount of times, in both the electric El Rayo-X version, and, his far smaller Little Big Music acoustic performances.
I have an extensive collection of his performances. I've got to say that this song list is absolutely wonderful. And, the renditions,.... Let me try to describe,...
Auld Lang Syne - I never want to hear the basic version, ever again. The rasta version is far better.
Ain't it Crazy, To Keep on Rubbing at That? - Lightning Hopkins really? This is an absolute gem.
Leave Home Girl - Bonnie Raitt just beautiful, and, rootsy! This one made Mr. Dave become Chuck the Whining Rasta
Quarter of a Man - probably my favorite Lindley tune. I picked up on it immediately in pre-song tuning, and, you can actually hear me say something in a live recording moment; Quarter Mon Quarter Mon,.. the Moke chant preamble. I'm not speaking quietly either. It was just that loud of a concert!
The Lonesome Fugitive - Merle Haggard. Who'd a thunk'd there'd ever be a rastafarian version of Merle? yet another new fave.
enough of my critiquing,... This is an absolute gem of a performance. One of the best as the X-Ray's
Mr. Dave was on fire.
Now, on the master cd-r set, I had included as filler, a song recorded by a friend in Seattle.
He recorded Mr. Dave and the Wally Lama (Wally Ingraham) in an acoustic duet of Dave and Drums. Mark is an infamous taper, and modifier of our gear.
In this song, Mr. Dave laid out a basic setlist song, Jimmy Hoffa Memorial Building Blues, in reggae style.
Then, spontaneously, out came the Richard M. Nixon Memorial Dub. Oh dear god!
This recording has the voice of thunder in it; monster bass, and from just two players. And, it is natural, not computer induced bass. To quote Dave, again,... Its just a really fat string on my hawaiian lap steel guitar (a real antique hawaiian koa wood lap steel pair).
Back to New Years Eve 89 concert,... I think this is the first time being shared?
I do hope you'll enjoy.
