My 5 cats LOVE the move to our Santa Fe, NM home.

The house has LOTS of windows, with foot-wide wooden window sills.
Since the house is surrounded by Juniper and Pinyon trees, the bird population is substantial.
90% of the time, you will find the cats either snoozing in a sunny window sill location, or bird watching.
I'll try to post a couple of pics, 'cause its so funny seeing 5 cats all jammed together on ONE window sill, trying to catch a peek at a Pinyon Jay!

Please do throw some pics up. Always loved the Utah area when going through it but don't believe I've ever seen much of NM.

You have grass out there or just dust/dirt?
 
Even hear a cat make an odd sound while bird watching?

A quick jaw movement which makes a kkhh sound and comes from the back of the throat?

Almost like they're saying: "come here birdy birdy", lol.

Sounds like a very nice place.

My 23 pound Maine Coon cat makes a clicking noise while hunting.
He's the only one of the 5 cats to have actually CAUGHT a bird.
He's also the best mouser, even though he's slow and can't jump!?
My wife saw a Road Runner in our yard a few days ago.
Not sure if the cats can handle on of those?

From what I hear cats are good at taking care of scorpions. But then, so are chickens. Santa Fe is a beautiful place. Do they still have the Georgia O'Keefe Gallery there?
 
I actually haven't spent that much time in the city of Santa Fe proper.
Been doing a lot of hiking in the Pecos Wilderness Area, and Santa Fe National Forest.

Beware of Rattlesnakes!!! They will be starting to come out here Very soon and they will be Kantankerous!!! At least until they get a full belly. :D

They are out already and kitty cats are not immune to their venom so always keep an eye out for them. They generally hunt at night but like to sun themselves in the early mornings and then seek shade from the sun till it's time to hunt.
 
i believe i heard somewhere that there is a skunk out west that loves rattlesnake meat for dinner-will even dig them out if necessary. so, maybe you will want to encourage some odoriferous companions to share your neighbohood.
 
My cats are old enough this year to be aware of the outside. One of the first things they want to do, when I let them out of the bedroom for the day, is look outside. They look through the front window, while standing on a wooden chair. The male starts switching his tail and sort of stomping....... of course they hit the scratching post and the food dishs too.
 
Outdoor cats in New Mexico = Coyote Food

My wife's boss didn't know this, when he moved to Santa Fe 3 years earlier.
He let his two cats out the front door.....and they became "carry-out" food.....never to return.

Yup that's the sound. Makes you wonder if it's a fake bird call to lure them in. lol.

We've got Coyotes around here as well but they seem to stay on the far side of the highway although I did hear them fairly clearly this winter a few times. Up in the Yukon it was wolves that made off with a few pets. My 20+ lb Turkish Van stayed indoors then though cause the snow in the yard was 4 feet deep and even deeper beside the sidewalk. He'd look outside, see the wall of snow, his ears would go back, he'd flick his tail and then turn around in disgust.:D

He loves it further south here in Saskatchewan, winters are about 3 months shorter and the snow is never more than a foot or so deep except when it drifts. We actually chose the house we bought with the critters in mind. Gotta keep em happy.:yes:
