My "Bozaks of chocolates" moment

I don't get the part about those cabinets being undersized. I have the same cabinets and put JBL LE14s in. They are a great cabinet to EWave. The center console is nice too.
Some people said they look undersized for Bozak (~5.5 ft³ per woofer minimum), and some people said oversized for the Altecs, and neither has anything to do with LE14s... the actual volume has not been posted. This thread is confusing! Anyone ever measured parameters on a 601? If you want to try to figure a port math-free, perhaps the 601-8D on this chart would get you close: http://www.lansingheritage.org/images/altec/plans/1968-enclosure/page04.jpg

It must have been a common kit builders choice to buy Bozak E300 cabinets and equip them with a simpler, less expensive full range driver. I think people liked the Bozak furniture but were satisfied with a repectable full range that let them ignore or avoid the mystery and vaguerie of crossovers and such. From personal experience, I was a college student in 1970 and at that point my strategy was to stretch my meager funds with sweat equity. I chose a 100 watt per channel Knight receiver kit and a triaxial pair of Utah 12" speakers. I then built cabinets from plywood according to the plans that came with the speakers. I was really happy with my system which cost less than 200 dollars.
Since I have been bitten by AK fever. I have found 2 seats of Bozak Urban cabinets ($50 & $35) and both of them had nice full range drivers in them, neither had any Bozak drivers or parts at all. Both had the woofer cut out sized down to fit a normal sized 12". One pair had EV 12trxb Drivers and the other had JBL D123s.
I am converting them to 3way Bozaks but I still need the b209b midranges to complete the project. I did get a hold of a couple of the older mids and I have the crossovers recapped and one of the set put together. 3way beats the 2way Bozaks hands down.

I believe the cabs are about 4.7 ft^3. At least mine were when I measured them some time back. If they weren't big enough for Bozak woofs, I guess a lot of speakers were made wrong.

Shoot. Bad tweeter on one of them. But now I feel like I'm into this and I want to see about repairing it. MicroMike, you say?

Yep. Not cheap - last time I heard anything, it was running around $180 per tweeter, and the lead time on the repairs is long. That said, the 3000 is a damned fine reproducer. I've been thinking about integrating fuses into my 601A systems before they go back into service in order to at least attempt to protect the original 55+ year old diaphragms.

Hey schmikka,

Have you given any thought to converting these to Econowaves? Looks like it might be a sensible approach if you have the ability to replace the motorboards.... I am considering that route with my Barzilay cabinets and the Bozak B199a woofers.

Interestingly, I just bought a beautiful pair of 601Cs at a college surplus auction. Both tweeters are showing open. :(

That is quite a coincidence! What do you think you're going to do with them? Should there be much difference between the A, B, and C versions of the 601 duplex?

Bozak B199a woofers are not good candidates for e-waves. They are best crossed over at 400 hz, too low for the e-wave design.

I'm not sure what the differences are, but the B version didn't last long. I have a B crossover that's going to have to be gutted to fix one of the 3000E crossovers that match the 601Cs. And I have zero idea what I'm going to do with them. Outside of being dusty and having blown tweeters, they're in beautiful shape.

If you run out of ideas on what to do with that Bozak console, you could always do this. Mine was pretty beat up when I got it (and had no drivers in it) so I decided to go the Ewave route and retrofit. Kind of lost it's vintage look by the time I was done with it - LOL. The speakers sound superb though.

Well after a good bit of back and forth (and searching on eBay for Bozak components), I decided to go back to plan A and give them a go as fully Bozak speakers, the Duplexes having made their way to Barter Town. I got what I think is a decent deal on the whole shebang, but I guess I didn't get the very best aluminum midranges (I got the B209As). My next question - the seller didn't provide wiring - anyone have a good photo of their Bozak hookup (without and with the Tobin mods) or a schematic? I've done some searching and can't seem to find one without joining the Yahoo Bozak group, which I will do at some point. Before moving to Tobin mod stage I'd at least like to hear them hooked up the original way. Can't figure out where else the woofers are wired to along with the crossover...
