My First Alnico Speakers, May Have Struck Lucky...

I found a single Norwegian-made 12"1950's DHN speaker years back at a thrift store, when I was vacationing in Vancouver, BC.
A beautiful gold-frame and the largest Alnico magnet I had ever run across???
I paid $15 (Canadian) for it, and shipped it back to where I was living at the time; Maryland.
It went into a DIY 1 x 12 speaker, and had an incredible tone 2die4!!
I ended up giving it to a REAL guitarist (my daughter's boyfriend), who has toured extensively with it.

Not odd . I've sold a bunch of old Japanese vintage loudspeaker drivers I picked up from a flea market . The alnico has sold out completely . Tube guys love those type speakers . Still stuck with the lousy ceramic magnets . I'll take lousy alnico any day !!

I suspect my non Alnico recent Tannoys combined with my non Alnico M & K sub and gasp non BOTL black Yamaha HTR would stomp 95% of Alnico speakers + tubes out there.

Anyone want to race? :)

As several have already pointed out, there were many lousy Alnico drivers built in the past. They do have a semi-cult following, especially among musicians; but then, I suppose professionals do get them remagnetized on a fairly regular basis.

As long as people recognize that they'll need maintenance from time to time, I see nothing wrong with Alnico drivers, at least the good ones.

Oh I agree Terry, I just think a magnet is a magnet and the action is in diaphragms, crossovers and cabinets. :)

I'm pretty much in agreement. I have friends that I respect on both sides of the arguement, so all I can say is that I don't believe that I've ever heard a difference. One possibility however, is that for a certain amount of magnetic strength, an Alnico magnet (when properly maintained) can be physically smaller, which may have a slight advantage over larger magnets when you deal with the reflections within a cabinet.

The drivers which use Neo magnets are usually pretty small as well, so that advantage isn't necessarily entirely in the Alnico camp.

Terry

The focus of the magnetic field is indeed different between alnico and ferrite/ceramic. Now as to which one is better, that's completely subjective.
