My Garage Sale Find

So, I went to a garage sale a couple weeks ago. Didn't see anything special there, but there were some tapes and LPs. I asked the lady at the register if they had any old stereo gear they wanted to get rid of. She said there was some stuff and called her husband over to talk about it. He said there was some equipment he had gotten back in the 60's. I rattled off some names and when I mentioned McIntosh...bingo.

They were heading out of town soon and wouldn't be back until Nov. He said the stuff was in the attic. When they got back he would dig it out and give me a call. Well, that call came yesterday. I said I'd be there in a hour. Grabbed some cash and headed out the door.

I had thought he said the amp was a MC240, when I first talked to him. It wasn't a 240 and I didn't have enough cash on hand. I had to go back today with the balance and this is what I came home with:

Congratulations on your find. Get the 275 tuned up and you will love it. I still remember firing mine up for the first time. I had little or no tube experience before that. I really like that amp.

Garage sale find in McIntosh forum got my click and you did not disappoint. Congratulations. Nice job on handling your seller, it takes a little finesse to land the big ones. If I am going to nitpick, I would have wished for a C22.

Ironically, the C24 was undoubtedly a higher tech choice at this time. Interesting that the buyer chose the MC275 over the also available solid state MC2105 ...

It would take decades for the C22 & MC275 to appreciate as they have. Buy boy have they!

:yikes: this is so unfair......... but,...... a hearty Congratulations!!! :beerchug:

Well, if it makes you feel better, I paid more than garage sale prices!

Does anything work?

The tuner lights up, but haven't tested it for functionality.
Preamp is untested so far.
The amp works fine as far as I can tell. Brought it up slowly on a variac and hooked some small speakers to it. It makes music.

Ask and you shall receive.... I actually have a C22. Bought it a few years ago (not cheap) with the intention to flip it to pay for my kitchen remodel. The longer I held onto it, the more I wanted to get a matching McIntosh amp. Really wanted a amp with the meters on it, but the MC275 will suffice for now.....ha. Also have a MR-67 tuner that came with the C22. Both of those are still untested after all this time...

There are probably caps that need replacing, which will make a good winter project. Like I don't have enough projects already....

I scored an original in 95 or so. It also worked after being brought up slowly on the variac, but made like 15wpc ... caps were long gone.
