My latest three way loudspeaker design has finally come to fruition!

Big Bill

Summertime Rolls.....
Hello gents, I’m writing today to share with you my latest creation. A set of DIY three way loudspeakers. These are a culmination of what I’ve learned and (most importantly) what I’ve been able to afford and "cobble" together with my own two hands to date. I’m using Vifa D27TG-05-06 tweeters, Peerless 832873 HDS 5-1/4", and Dayton 15 classics. I went with a second order Linkwitz/Riley (with Zobel correction circuits) crossed at a theoretical 300 and 3000Hz. The cabinets are constructed utilizing three quarter inch med density fiber board with internal bracing. I placed each driver as close together as my (very) limited woodworking skills would permit. I also chose to truncate all the drivers in the baffle board. In addition I also installed a “beard” for the tweeters, made of some thick construction type felt to help absorb some “jitter” that I believed was still present despite its being truncated. The crossover networks are constructed with at least one mylar cap per cap cluster to help to influence the electrolytic caps behavior. The inductors are home made hand wound jobbers that I will soon replace with Erse Super Coils once funds allow. I built some speaker stands to achieve the correct driver height from three quarter inch birch plywood. I think I did a fair job with the stands design as they appear to be part of the speakers but are not. I placed some three eights inch nuts (4) on the upper speaker stand “plate” in each corner of each to help minimize energy transfer between the cabinet and the upper "plate" until I can obtain some proper “spikes”, however the nuts do seem to do the job just fine. I am very pleased with what I’m hearing and imagine things will only get better through further crossover modification/tweaking.

Thanks to all for reading and for any comments as these represent a lot of time and effort on my part to say the least, Bill. :thmbsp:

Those look great - that bass cabinet with the motor board look was very popular at AK fest the last couple of years. Nice work!

I think they turned out real nice. I like the choice of drivers and the beard for the mid and tweeter. I also like the depth of the box design I'm sure it allows nice deep bass from the daytons. a great design overall. I'm currently putting together a diy project featuring all Hivi woofers mids and tweeters.I may post a pic when they are finished. Best regards Tim.

Thanks guys!

Those look great ... Nice work!

Thanks brother!

Thanks and please do post them once done. :thmbsp:

I like them alot. Fantastic work. What are you powering them with and tell us about the finish.

Thanks! I'm using a VTA/Dynaco ST-70 to drive them at the moment. As far as finishes are concerned, the baffles were sprayed with a flat black and then sprayed with a lacquer for a “deep” black look. The cabinets were done using a brushed "low luster" (for durability) flat black Behr indoor latex paint in hopes of keeping the baffles as the center of attention. Lastly the stands were done with a brushed black semi-gloss indoor Behr latex paint.

Very nice indeed!

Thanks Nick! :thmbsp:

Wow Bill that's some mighty fine cobbling! Those look very professional. :thmbsp::thmbsp:

So just how big is that woofer box? Ported or no?

Hey Bill,
Me likey bunches. I hadn't seen this design before. I thinkI am going to do a near copy of yours.

Bill,

When I saw your speakers that first think that came to mind was "Those look really cool." Never saw anything like them before. You seem to have the brain for this kind of stuff. I can't wait to hear your impressions on the sound.

Two thumbs up to you Bill. :thmbsp::thmbsp:

Being a custom builder myself I can appreciate work well done and yours certain are! How well do your drivers match up? The graph on the tweeter looked a little hot, did not know if you padded it down. The mid driver looked like a good selection- very flat and the xover point looked perfect for the three drivers as well.
Great job there.

They look great!

Are they sealed?

You might be able to get those stands rocking back and forth if you aren't careful. :D

Thanks guys.....

Thanks Mark, please let me know if I can be of any help.

Hey man, those look crazy cool! Excellent work.

Thanks! :thmbsp:

How do they sound?

Well, "harmonious" is one word I'd use to describe them.

Thanks for the very kind post Trip! As far as "impressions" are concerned, I'm still tweaking them but I will post them once I've redone the crossovers.

Great craftsmanship Bill!

Thanks Joseph!

Thanks for the compliment DC! :thmbsp: I attenuated the tweeters down 3.5 Db and to my ear, the drivers match up very well now.

Great work, gifted with woodworking for sure.

Thanks HiFi! :thmbsp:

You should post the plans if people are interested....

Thanks, that’s very kind of you to say.

They look great!

Thanks Herb!

Are they sealed?
