I bought these tonight with a pair of epi M50 speakers. they both have stancor power tx's, and "coil engineering" output transformers. the PO put banana plug receivers on them, and a power switch in the power cord to the wall (power for the second goes through the utility plug of the main amp).

both have the same circuit with a 6AN8, 5Y3, and 6V6 tubes. apparently the PO did no recapping, but I have to take them off the board to see up their skirts, and that has to wait until I know them better :)

I have some iPhone pics, but cannot size them to load. I will do that in the morning!

here are some pics.

any thoughts on the switch to a 12ax7 rather than the 6an8? i've seen mention of it as being a possibility for these. what are the benefits?

Without seeing a circuit can't really tell how they'd run it, But for me a 12ax7 is an lousy
tube choice for "driving" output tubes, let alone more "gain" then needed for 6v6 outputs.

Other then that cute little pair of amps.. :)

so kegger, just recap and enjoy? pretty much what I planned to do; I'd just seen some discussion about the switch and wondered about its merits. I don't know enough to understand how it would affect the sound unless people write in small words, and soooowly ;)

I have a pair of those sitting around as well, and I've been up in the air on restoring and selling them or tearing them out completely, and basically starting over. Just looking at them in your pix, it occurs to me that the layout would be perfect for a 5Y3/ dual 6SN7/SEP 6BQ5 build.....

Is there a schematic floating around for these?

Though it probably works well as-is- it'd be interesting to re-wire the front end like a Dynaco MK III (same driver tube)... change it from paraphase, to split-load phase inverter. I'd think it might well have better output waveform symmetry between the top and bottom output tubes...

If I get a pair of these, I think that's what I'm going to do to them...

Regards,
Gordon.

A friend of mine has a pair of these and they are very impressive little amps as-is. Re-cap (if necessary) and enjoy...

they need recapping, and i think a couple of tube sockets. and a newer pair of 6an8s. i have 5y3's and 6v6s enough, though. and a new base, with a fix to the hack job done to get the speaker connections up to modern.
