My Yamaha YP-701 is coming into its own

Well, after struggling with the speed on my new to me YP-701, it's finally starting to settle down a bit. For the moment, the platter still has a thick ring of tape where the belt rides because you folks have helped determine that my belt is probably too thick, affecting its speed undesirably.

I've got a new belt coming in the mail which should be arriving here in a few days. In the meantime, I've been periodically testing its RPMs with that nifty little app.

The latest numbers:

That's a huge improvement over my initial numbers with the brand new belt and no tape on the platter. Hopefully the new belt has a thin enough wall that it will produce decent numbers without the tape.

I've also decided to switch cartridges and put the Denon DL-110 back on. That's just such a great sounding, energetic cartridge, it's a shame not to give it some play time.

I've noticed a little 'easter egg' that Yamaha has given its clients. Their attention to little details is awesome. It's in the photo above, I'll give you folks a chance to figure it out before I tell what it is.

Although it's not really comparable to the ones some of you heavy hitters play with, the tonearm of this table seems like a work of art - so intricate and fluid, yet easy to balance. It makes the minimalist tonearm of my P-751 feel like a toy. LOL

I really like this turntable. Like I mentioned in a prior post, I've never had a piece of audio equipment as nice as this. I've spent this whole rainy Sunday just spinning records and enjoying how nicely my entire system has come together (cheers to the members of AK for your help). I wish my dad was here. I think he'd have a blast playing with all this stuff that hails from the era when he was about my age and into audio equipment. The look on his face seeing all these familiar switches, meters, knobs, and dials, with a nifty old record player to listen through it would be priceless.

The 701 is something special. And, yes, your Dad would surely have approved. I know mine did back in '75 when he first bought one of these fine tables.
