My yard sale find - Marantz 4300

Well, there were only four yard sale ads in the paper today, so I thought about just staying home, but I had that niggling feeling. I'm so glad I went out!

At the third sale I saw a box of blank cassette tapes, and I've read here how it never hurts to ask. They had a Marantz 4300 receiver in wood, down in the basement!

It needs some control/switch cleaning, but the offsets are good. Maybe one 'STEREO' light is out. This thing sounds great, it's playing in my workshop as I type this.

They also had a Yamaha YP-D71 turntable, no dustcover, no anti-skate weight.

I got the 4300 for $60 and $10 for the turntable. Anyone know where I can get a dust cover and/or an anti-skate weight?

(Happy) Tom

Wow, a 4300 and you got a wood case too for $60.
I'll give you double your money for it right now and promise I won't back out of the deal

That stereo indicator light is a different value than the other indicator lamps. PM dgwojo. I gave him the info on the 4270 & 4300 and he has the bulb you need.

4300 Dirty Nudie

What a beast! The power transformer is way over sized for 100X2 or 4X40 Watts! I've worked on engines that weigh less!

Not too bad, a little dusty. There may be a couple of bulging caps on the power supply board, 805 and 807, I'll have to pull the board to be sure. Could just be the plastic covering that has shrunk.

Jim, I'm sorry but I just gotta reject your kind offer!:D
Thanks for the tip on the bulb and for the manual.
This forum is great because of the help the folks here provide!

Wow! You found a keeper! The 4300 is an outstanding receiver. I found one at a thrift store a year or so ago and fell in love with it when I got home. it cleaned up very nicely and I love the warm sound. Does yours have the quad processor? It would be in the compartment on the bottom.

Congratulations, and enjoy!:music::thmbsp:

Thanks!
Nope, no decoder! Just a place for it. Do you have one? Do you use it for quad decoding? I have no quad sources, do I need the decoder?

I've been cleaning all day. Got the bias and offset adjusted, all controls cleaned, still have the front panel and wood case that needs some TLC.
Tomorrow maybe, if the honey-do's don't get tin the way. :D

I've a 4300 also and love it. It has what I call "the two martini sound."

One weakness is that a set of transistors in the buffer amp section goes bad with time, distorting the sounds as it warms up,

I've got some detailed instructions on which ones to replace and with what components.

The tuner section is very nice, comparable to their TOTL tuners at the time but without some bells and whistles like an o'scope. It is definitely worth getting an FM alignment.

The decoder is only important for listening to SQ quad in quad. You won't miss it.

One application for these older quad receivers/amps is to bi-amp your speakers. If you have a pair of speakers that would be happy with 40 wpc on the bass and 40 wpc on the top end, one could drive them from this unit. The controls to do so are on the front.

The wood case responds well to an orange oil or lemon oil rub-down. One can use fine steel wool for an initial treatment but beware that too much steel can cut through the walnut stain so using a soft cotton cloth is safer.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone!

Whitehall, I'd like to see the instructions on the component replacement, and the other info as well.
I got 'er cleaned up and back together just a bit ago... I'm listening to 'the two martini sound' right now.
Here are some poor pictures. I need a new camera!

That's sharp!
And you won't have to bite your fingernails for two weeks wondering if the seller packed it right.

Wow, did that turn out nice !!
That gives me the bug to finish getting mine cleaned up.
It keeps getting pushed to the back of the project list since I have my 4270 for quad right now.

Are those the stock dial lights or did you go to LED's?
I see you got the stereo indicator light going. Good Job.

When I got my 4300 someone had put a couple wrong value indicator bulbs in. You could see where the stereo indicator light had really blown (exploded glass). It also caused problems with the FM tuning meter. I replaced all the bulbs with the correct values and all my problems went away.

Fast forward a little over eight (8!) years and I finally have my nearly flawless 4300 completely restored (except for the Dolby module and the SQA decoder, which I should have done in the next few days). I retired it from use in 2008 due to popping in one of the channels.

Here it is sans the covers and wood case which I am still cleaning. I rebuilt it using everything I have learned in the time I have been restoring Marantz gear and reading this forum.
Thanks to all of you who have helped me on this journey!
I hope to get the modules finished, the covers and case on , then install in my living room as my daily driver. I got to listen to it last night and it sounds really nice.

Tom

P.S. The Yamaha turntable still spins records in a friend's system.

Wow, AK's longest running thread maybe? Cool you finally took a break from serving others to get a deserving unit the love it deserved. :D
