Nad 3140 help

willie garvi

Audio Junkie
Hi everyone,

As an audiokarma newbie who was only validated yesterday I'm slowly finding my way around.

I hope this is the right place to ask questions & if it is not please tell me where & how to do it!!!

Anyway I was in the chat room earlier this morning & my help came from Modge.

Can you tell me what I have to do to connect a Nad 3140 amp to a HK PA2400 power amp.

Modge told me that I could use the Nad as a preamp, but I don't know how!!

Any advice is welcome.

At the back of your Nad you must be able to see two pairs of phono ( RCA) sockets labbelled "Pre-out" and " Power-in" or similar. A pair of metal jumpers is probably connecting them.

Remove the jumpers, and connect a pair of interconnect cables from the "Pre-out" sockets on your Nad 3140 to the RCA sockets in your HK.

Nad 3140 used as a pre amp

Hi HiFi Nut,

Thanks for the info re the Nad amp, please see attachment.

Having looked at the attachment I would remove the link shown, I am still unsure how to connect to the HK, what cables would go from where to where.

My apologies but I am not a techie.

Can you use any preamp or must it match the power amp in some way!

The power amp is a Harman Kardon PA2400.

Interesting photo, that metal u-shaped bar should be installed on both left and right if your 3140 was working properly.

But to answer your question, pull the jumper that remains. Take a pair of RCA interconnect cables, connect the Pre-amp OUT jack to the input jack of your power amp. Left to left, and right to right.

Right.

Jeff, who is no idiot, despite his handle, just nailed it.:D

To answer your question, as a general rule, just about any pre-amp will work with any power amp. There are exceptions, but those are rare indeed.

Keep us posted, will you?

Thanks to HiFi Nut & Specialidiot,

The attachment photo was cut from a computer image, as mine is hiding behind a huge stack of cd's etc.

My apologies for this, but I thought a picture would clarify things.

I have got the idea now, but to further educate me what is the difference between an amp & a preamp!!

Thanks guys.

The preamp is the control section, switches sources and provides phono eq. An amp provides the power only. Takes a small low current voltage signal and increases the current and voltage to drive speakers.
