Nakamichi RX-505 Cassette Deck Sound Issue

Good suggestion. Thank you. I just checked and the erase head is working.

I guess I will take a look at the service manual and see what I can see..

Check offset of cam motor in accordance with SM (offset fine adjustment of Control Motor Driver) and record switch/linkage wire.

Oh man. I just looked at that in the service manual. These decks are super complex for sure.

First I'm going to make certain that I'm not just making some stupid user error.

After that I'm hoping for something obvious - like being able to eyeball the record switch linkage you mentioned.

The first 2 are difficult, then you get used to it. :) Remember, if you're taking the mechanism apart (it still needs maintenance and belts replaced) when screwing it together, turn each screw counterclockwise first so it fits exactly into the old tapped thread. You do not want to damage plastic what became brittle.

Appreciate the help. I may not be able to get to this today, but I will ASAP and will let you know what happens.

Good luck! I suppose you could try to trace the signal, from line-in to the recording head. Although that is probably not to easy on this deck either.

Ok I have the cover off. In the photo, that is the main cam gear correct?

I'm confused because I'm not seeing anything like is shown in the SM - with markings and a chassis mounted pointer.

You should remove front panel to get access to transport. There is window. But check switch first, is it working OK when deck goes to record mode?

I do have the front panel removed. Ok I will look again.

Yes the record switch lights up red - and stays lit - while in record mode.

Well, I am familiar with classic transport, but not particular 505. Maybe on RX-505 is no linkage wire and there is another design of switch.
Just wait, someone will explain that.

You may found this thread useful.

I finally got back to this, and the problem has been found.

The issue was that when I cleaned the head, I did not get all of the dirt. Everything is now clean as a whistle and the deck works great!

I don't think so. There is no evidence of cigarette smoke on this deck - as well as on some other items I got from the same individual. But whatever was on the head was definitely like a thin coating of tar.
