There is an exceptionally NASTY virus out called Windows Accelerator Pro that will lock up your computer and hold it hostage by attempting to extort money for a removal system. DO NOT download any seemingly legit programs to view videos. If you have this virus, when you turn on your computer, there will be a screen called Windows Accelerator Pro that will look like it's scanning for viruses. If you see this, turn off your computer and seek out a professional to remove it. My lovely wife has already had her computer infected.

Every site I've looked at to remove this Windows Accelerator Pro virus recommends downloading software to remove it. I find this a bit suspect. If you get a virus by downloading software, downloading software from a site about removing a virus seems a bit iffy to me. Go to a pro and learn from your mistakes.

Depends on the source for the software. If you go to Symantec or Kaspersky, they are legit and provide lots of free removal tools. Some viruses will block the computer from going to those sites, though.

Exactly - I have experienced one of those, a bit nasty, only because I have several computers could I dig myself out of this hole. :thmbsp:
 
I had an experience with one of those types of virus. I have two users on my computer and the virus only locked me out of the one I was using at the time. I was able to open the other user and run a scan and delete it.
 
Thanks for the heads up. Our computers are for work and the iPads are for play and web surfing. This has cut down on IT issues in my home.

Please tell your wife the Rules:
1. Never open an attachment in an e-mail from someone you don't know, and if you get an e-mail from someone you know but with only one line of text, like "Check out this photo" don't open it, or scan it with antivirus first.

2. Don't click on any links in Facebook.

3. Don't go to websites you are not sure if they are legitimate.

Get McAffee Siteadvisor. It's free and works with any browser. If you try to go to an unsafe website, it warns you.
 
Been taking that off on a weekly basis. If you have had it for awhile it can be a MF to take off. The worst I see out there now is getting Hijacked by Conduit.
 
I have used Microtrend security software for about 15 years. They have a very nice online scanner called House Call. It will scan you computer, and clear it of evil for free. If you are looking for the best in anti-virus software look no farther then Microtrend. One of the things you have to have in a good anti-virus scanner is it starts before windows starts this prevents malware from stopping security monitoring from scanners that start after window loads.

Unless they have fixed it Malwarebytes is not compatible with jRiver it reports it as being a virus and blocks it.

Conduit was another one she stumbled into. That was easier to remove, by comparison. With this one, you can't get past the scanning screen.
 
i found a program that you could install on a usb thumbdrive that you would then boot your computer from... The antivirus / malware removal tool would then work from there. I forget what it was but it helped me to eradicate the virus / malware that hijacked my boot up sequence.
 
It's called Ransomware, try a "restore" and then Malwarebytes and Roguekiller (both free) in combination.
 
I had success on one computer that would not go into safe mode after being infected with Ransomware by pulling the power as it was booting up. Killing it midstream of boot.

Then when powering on the next time it went to the screen where you can choose to go to safe mode with networking as an option or start in last known. Went to safe mode with networking. Then deleted any new programs and ran Malware bytes.

On another I had to delete the user profile also.

boot to safe mode .restore to earlier date . boot up system .edit registry . worked for me .
it is best to save everything you want to external then do a format and fresh install . that will surely get rid of it and start yourself with a nice clean system .
i used to get this crap all the time . i moved to linux and no probs for at least 5 years . i do still use windows for a few car diagnostic programs but its very rarely connected the internet .
