lol....that really made me laugh! How ridiculous. I've run my 10's on an Onkyo Integra M504 (165 wpc) to ear splitting levels and never once did they complain. You are the first person I have ever ever heard say they are better for low power applications! lol
I said I was done. But one more time. What you are failing to realize from the OP's question. Is that he is not looking for a pro set up. With 1000 watt amps etc. He asked for suggestions in his listening environment. You were talking about a WOPL! lol
I am not naive enough to purposely try to blow a pair of great speakers. If that is you thing then great. But that is not what the OP asked about now is it? But I value great sound and my ears more personally.![]()
You really want to go there?
You have about half the power I have and less headroom, that could be the reason :scratch2:. Also, a WOPL1000 will have 5x the power of your 504
What is earsplitting levels to you? I challenge you to put a Slayer - Reign in Blood cd in and crank your 504 to the max (which is just when my WOPL gets warmed up) and see how long the 10s will last. Both my sets of Monitor 10s were the 10A's w/ external fuses that were only 2.5 amp. I bumped them up to 3.5a and they did not last much longer, an extra second at most. Heck, my 300w Vega's are in danger as the WOPL has tripped the internal protections of the crossovers many times. Dynamic transients hitting 700-1000w will do that. I run 5amp fastblo fuses in them
By lower power application, I was referring to 100w amps or less, certainly not 500-1000w amps. That 250w max output rating suggested by Polk for them might last a millisecond or two. Certainly not the length of a whole cd cranked 3 quarter power to compete with my guitar tube amp when I am playing along with my system at concert SPL's
I spent about $20 a pair for them so it was cheap fun seeing what they could take
I use the power of my amps, very rarely is there casual listening levels in this house
Speaking of handeling power. Im driving two amp/speaker systems off one pre.
One is MC501 mono blocks & JBL L250s so 500w into a 400w speaker.
The second one is Two MC275s bridged mono blocked & Sansui SP-5000 so 180w going into a 100w 102db speaker.
That 180 watts of tube power into those SP-5000 will blow you out the house. You can go across the street and sit in their living room and the sound level will be good.:thmbsp:
Did I mention nothing has ever been done to those suis since they were built and I still can't blow them up![]()
Though I am not really a CV fan. I do miss the D9's I had. My daily drivers these days are Infinity RSIIIa's. And for what I have in them could not be happier with their sound. I do want a pair of BA A400's or ADS 1590's or there abouts.![]()
If you feel the urge Dan, I could always send a WOPL your way for Sansui humbling duties. Jason destroyed a CV 300w voice coil by accident with one (he says it was an accident but I think he was having a Northwinds moment). That's the thing with these WOPL's.... you WANT to keep turning the volume knob to the right, they just get better sounding but become lethal to unsuspecting speakers. Lee just blew up a very expensive woofer in his Khorns with the $8k crossovers in them

I have heard that the ADS 1590s are very good speakers, I would love to try a pair myself. The guys at Phoenix that run D9's mod them somehow so the can take more abuse. Lately, Khorns are the rage over there so hopefully in the next few years I might end up with a pair when things get better financially. Of course, by then they will be on to the next thing LOL
I had Quantum 5's, SM-120s and 150 monitors. I did some work to the SM cabs to make them better sounding. I really liked them but all are gone now, all succumbed to the mighty WOPL. I try to be a bit more conservative with the E-712's since I can't afford another pair of speakers any time soon
Just my opinion here. But Inifnity's SM line should have never been built.
