Need help deciding

Hi everyone. I currently have a 5.1 entry level HTS similar to the one here: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...ay-home-theatre-system-bdve3100/10320893.aspx

It is located in our living room, which is about 300 square feet. It sounds pretty good, but I'm looking for a small upgrade. I'm wondering if the "mini HIFI bookshelf style" systems would be considered an upgrade - ie: more clarity, more bass punch, etc. Here is an example: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/denon-d-m41-mini-hifi-cd-system-with-bluetooth/10740543.aspx?

Again, is this a case of "same sh#t, different pile" or will I get a substantial upgrade in sound quality by upgrading to a bookshelf style mini hifi system?

Thanks in advance,
-Leighton

You sound like you are on your way to building a better system. I think you should first get a cheap sub. That will get you the bass and explosion power for the least price. Check out HSU. If you want to get better speakers try SVS. They have the all in one budget home theater set up. I started out like you and ended up going crazy. I was never satisfied so finally went to large seperate amps and large accurate speakers. I bought used speakers on Ebay and Craigslist, then rebuilt them or had them rebuilt for me. I did the cabinet work but left the crossover and driver rebuild to a factory professional. This is what happens if you get the bug of upgradeitis, LOL. I ended up building a center channel speaker to match 4 speakers that were very flat in response but needed alot of power, very ineficient. Thousands of dollars later, and a few years I am now in heaven with movies and music. I ended up with ADS L1290/2s for my large speakers, I have a low priced HSU sub spent 600$ for it and it is killer for the price. I am using 4 ADS L300s for my height speakers. I got an Anthem P5 Statement amp for the large speakers, and got 2 Nikko Alpha 440s to drive the small ceiling speakers. If money is tight for you I would go with SVS. You will be very happy. Then save up and upgrade little by little. Good luck

Are you hung up on that "mini" system thing? For that $650 of your second item you could do well with entry level "real"/full size components.

Of course, if size is critical, then ignore what I just said and carry on.

You are talking about moving from a home theater surround system to a regular two channel stereo system. You need to consider a bit exactly what it is that you want - home theater or music reproduction.

Hey Gee Dee I think it's all the same. A good system can play both. Any amount of channels. Pre Amp can be programed for multiple set ups and configurations. Mine does Atmos and DTS X and 5.1 and stereo. I can program with or without sub. He should start with building towards full range and theater as the goal. A lot of music is encoded in 5.1 and it is better than the old 2 channel.

I have alot of binauaral music as well and that is where the real imaging comes into play. Stereo has a little left and right channel mixed in each channel. Dummy head recordings are the purist way to hear play back. No reflections or room colorisations because of headphones. A pair of super quality Stax and nothing can touch it. Not any speaker in a room.

Hey Plugto. I think, if you re-read thread and click on the links provided, you'll see the link to his current system shows a 5.1 system but the link to the system he's considering is a two channel unit.

He's asking the guy for clarification on exactly what he wants. Until he answers that, it's not likely he'll get tooo many responses.

No skip he's asking about upgrading his components. I got that he was looking for more of everything frequency riproduction you know what he's seeking is more quality audio. Have to start where the biggest bang for the buck is. I think a cheap but great sub would be the biggest improvment fot low cost.
