Please check your dehumidifiers.
Not the first recall from the same manufacturer.
I will withhold my comments on plastic dehumidifiers manufactured overseas.

If in fact these all involve dehumidifiers made from 2011 to 2014 the recall is worthless since on average, these made in China Gree products all last 1-2 years at best. Don't even get me started on what a waste these things are for the consumer and the landfills they end up in after a year. This is criminal. You really think they can't make a unit that lasts 5-10 years? They can, they just won't.

Remember when dehumidifier cabinets were made of metal instead of plastic that melts and burns, releasing toxic fumes?

I received a refund for a GE model in that recall. It was energy-star rated at the time but our new dehumidifier is more than twice as efficient. I believe new units are rated at 60F rather than 80F in the past. Our basement never gets above 70F so the new ratings are more realistic.

What caused the fires? Was it bad overload protectors that allowed a locked-rotor to keep drawing current? Too much plastic is another problem. Our old GE had an incredibly complex plastic collection reservoir and the whole design provided a significant fire-load. It's hard to understand why plastic is less expensive than metal.

I'm guessing when a manufacturer recalls 1.5 million units that metal would have been less expensive in the long run.
No. They are built to last 13 months. The warranty is 12 mos. Any recalls apply to units that are long gone. That is how they profit.

About 9 years ago my girlfriends dehumidifier burnt up and smoked out her entire house.

Her house insurance covered everything.
Whole house was emptied. New carpet, furnace, A/C unit. Fresh paint. All electronics got sent out for cleaning. New furniture.

To say the least, it was something else.

Second time for Gree. This one resulted in Criminal Penalties. Maybe a 10 year import ban would be better.

Issue with bans is they will just close and reopen under a new name the next day. China likes doing that. It's why import bans on Chinese manufactures basically stopped in the late 90s.

Unfortunately, you have figured out their business model.
Pathetic, isn’t it?
