New Receiver Recommendations

My Luxman R404 is having a problem with the left side cutting out. Sometimes, after it warms up, the left side speakers will come on, but not always. It has recently been serviced and recapped but that problem persists. Any thoughts?

This leads to my thread title. I recently just got a new television. So I am considering getting a new receiver that will connect with the tv (via HDMI or optical) and provide a phono input. The phono in provides a bit of a roadblock. I don't mind getting a preamp (I'm looking at the ART Pro Audio DJPre II) and would like to keep my price around $200 or less. Any thoughts on this?

There were allot of great audio-video receivers made back in the early nineties that still out performance anything made today. It really depends on your TV as I have a new Sylvania that has every hook up from RCA to HDMI that will accommodate any generation of AVR. Because for a true AV experience you need front speakers, rear speakers and a center speaker that sound excellent plus great video. Then on top of great sound and video you want something that will last so you don't have to continually replace junk which drives up the cost of maintaining the experience. There are early 90's AVR's made by Pioneer, Sony and Kenwood. Then the new A/V receivers can not be used in two channel stereo when not used in AV mode. Then, the best 90's AV receivers don't need external phono preamps and are allot more powerful due to better engineering. Then they are much cheaper to own and they last forever. You can route the video connections to the TV and the audio connections to the receiver if you have enough hookups on the back of your TV set. But, it's up to you to choose quality over convenience or vise versa....

Thanks. The tv is a Sony X930D. I was kind of thinking along the lines of your suggestion as I haven't been too impressed with any new models I have seen.
I don't need (necessarily) a complete home theater setup. I just want better sound than what comes out of the tv speakers. Do you have any suggestion on models?

Have heard from some picky guys on AK that the new Yamaha components are audiophile quality sounding with many features. For a phono pre, the art although is fine, would not be my choice ,the ART is what most people on AK are moving from, after all the great choices on budget phono preamps have become available. The Schiit Mani is $129 pre ,and a excellent choice, along with many others in the under $200 range. Good luck on your choices!!

Recent Marantz offerings have sounded good to my ears, including one with a very nice-sounding phono input (SR7008). I would not be afraid of buying recent but used models.

Marantz is a little out of my price range for now. Even the used offerings is see tend to be above what I can spend right now.

One I have considered is the Yamaha RX-V379BL. I'm assuming that the phono preamp I choose would connect into one of the AV lines while the tv would go into the HDMIarc connection?

I'm gonna bump this one last time for another question on a potential setup. After reading about this all day here's what I may settle on:
Sony X930D tv (already have)
Pioneer VSX531 (70w at 8ohms through 2 channel)
Little Bear Vacuum Tube Mini Phono Preamp
Pioneer PL4 turntable (already have)
Polk Monitor 10B (pair, already have)

So I would have the tv sound come through the Polk's, along with any other media I would play through the system (vinyl, streaming, gaming, etc.).

I also have a pair of Elac EL3 bookshelf speakers wired in series with the Polk's right now. I can repurpose those to another system if need be.

Thoughts?

looks like a nice little setup, cool idea on the little bear , been wanting to try one. I have not looked up the pioneer but as long as your gaming /tv/streaming cables match up to the receiver inputs your ok, HDMI output to HDMI input jack on receiver RCA is gaming output sound? to RCA input jacks aux in or other receiver in.......exc

Gaming console is all HDMI (PS4).

I know it's not the ultimate Home Theater setup but that's not entirely what I'm going for. My living room isn't really made for that, either. I'm just looking for a good, entry level system that can integrate the new technology components with the older ones I have and still produce a good sound.
