New To McIntosh gear I bought MR80 tuner!

I bought a Mac MR80 tuner and had it since last week, I have been enjoying it and it the best tuner I have had in my system. It grabs stations from 125 miles away and sound really nice. Good 3D with wide soundstage with depth.

At first this MR-80 had the normal issues with the preset and scan but the seller said it would only play in stereo sometimes. Well, after letting it play for 3 days straight it now as of today plays in stereo all the time. When I would turn it on it would take about 30 mins before the stereo light would come and actually play in stereo. Today I turned it on and the Stereo light lit up right away.

I found out to my surprise that this MR80 had been upgraded. all the power supply caps were upgraded to Nichicon Muse Gold, KZ, and FZ along with some low ESR types. So maybe it just needed some break-in. So one thing less to do.

I will still have to send it in to be aligned by Mike Zucarro.

Now I'm looking to add a Mac Preamp and Power amp. The ones I'm looking to add are the C32 preamp and MC7270 power amp. Hopefully I can find them for a good price.

Welcome to the Mac world. I'm glad you like it and hope you realize this isn't the last Mac piece you will buy. :)

Well you sure jumped in - many consider the MR80 to be the finest tuner Mc ever produced. A C33 / MC2255 would be more period correct, but I like your idea as well. Note that the MC7270 has a half glass faceplate that is the match to the 7082/7083 tuners and the C35/37 preamps.

I love my MR-80, even more so than the MR-78 which has a better reputation. But I'll guarantee you your 80 needs a tune up. send it to Ryan at Audio Classics and he will have one of his experts tune it up for you. Its a fantastic piece if given a little loving care every 20 years or so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You for the Welcome! Yes, I don't think this will be the last piece of Mac gear I buy and I already looking into a preamp and amp. I was looking at a MC7270 but now am looing at a MC252 power amp. :) Also the Wife loves the way the MR80 looks!

I'm sure it does need a tune up. I'm fortunate to have one of the best tuner guys here in San Diego in Mike Zuccaro. So I will be taking it to him.
