New to Vinyl and Need TT recommendations/counsel.

Hi All,

I wanted to close the loop on this and let you know that I decided on and purchased a completely refurbished and refinished Yamaha YP-D71. It looks amazing and will be here in a few days. After a lot of research and agonizing over all of the wonderful advice you all provided, this was the one that spoke to me the most. It seems like a highly regarded table on all accounts, played beautifully, and it and I are the same age! lol

I won't bother you today but next up will be recommendations on a new cartridge for classic rock/grunge/jazz, speakers, and a new phono preamp. But I will open up a new thread for that.

Thanks again to the AK community....you guys came through! =-)

Great choice! Post some photos and your thoughts on it once you've got it up and running. You'll definitely get some varied suggestions but it is certainly a table worthy of a nice cartridge (and a dedicated phono stage).

You first need to experience some darkness to be able to appreciate the wonders of electricity.

Lucas. The prince of Darkness.
Do you remember those vintage Girling shocks? They get this film of greasy, hairy fuzz all over them. After a while, you couldn't tell what they were or how to remove them. :)

Nice, very nice!! A very good way to start your own vinyl playback system!!

Don't be afraid to try a Yamaha CA- series amplifier from the 1970s, they are very good sounding. A CA-800 or CA-1000 and some Yamaha NS-690II or -690II or -670 speakers will be a visual match (and series match, too) and will have pretty serious sound quality.

Ok. Bad lighting but here it is!!

Big shout out to Turntable Tom, who replaced the veneer with real rosewood, cleaned it and did the maintenance on it! I’m in love with it. It sounds great and I have crap speakers and a crap phono stage in my Onkyo home theater receiver. It’s in such great shape even though it’s the same age as me!

Thanks for all of the help getting me started on my journey!

Beautiful wood grain on that baby- I hope it sounds as good as it looks ! You may want to consider trying an Oyaide BR-12 mat, I have them on my Technics SL-1200GR2 and Marantz 6200 tables that both have metal platters:

It really does sound great! I'm super happy with it.

Yamaha, yamaha!! On turntables i'm a Sony fanboy, but for speakers i'm a Yamaha nut.

NS-690II above, NS-690 is also good

NS-670, as good as the 690, just smaller:

NS-451, very cheap but very good

In the 80s and 90s it was amazing how they managed to convince the public buying the stuff that the more inconvenient it was the more Hifi it was.
I didn't hear Rega or Linn turntables until 1984, when I was actually shopping for an amplifier, but all it took to convince me that they sounded better was a comparative audition. Nothing amazing about the process--just simple comparisons that let my own ears decide what I liked best--but I was truly amazed at how much better the musical performance was on the model I then spent about a year scrimping and saving to buy, a Linn LP12 with Basik Plus tone arm and Basik cartridge.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and your positive impressions of it. Since it sounds "great," maybe your phono stage and speakers aren't as "crap" as you think!

Well, they're a little crap compared to what I will eventually get. lol

It sounds really nice though. I just love the aesthetic!

What did you do to me?!

I’m in love with this setup. Went to buy some NS-690iis on OfferUp, and the guy ended up having a CR-1020, fully recapped, new incandescents, and fully serviced. Pretty mint, for both….and original Yamaha stands for the speakers. Got a pretty good deal for both. Soooo good!

Thanks for the recs!

Wonderful. I bet it sounds as good as it looks. You lucky guy got a CR-1020, the holy grial of Yamaha receiver lovers. I only got up the CA-1000 (integrated amp), the top of the line amp of the early 70s.

I also had the NS-690II in the past, and the NS-670, all very sweet, natural, relaxed, "open" sounding. These i've sold them but kept my Yamaha NS-500, a different animal, detailed, agressive, fast and punchy.

As for the speaker stands, that's the first time i've ever seen them and I didn't even know they existed!
