Well, thanks to the help here and at the FMtunerinfo site, and a lot of searching around, I found a sweet tuner for my 2 channel system. The Onkyo T-4310R.

Finally got it hooked up and am enjoying it immensely through my recently rebuilt Scott 299B and Jensen 15" 3ways with horns and sonodomes. My Scott340B may actually become my wifes system, hooked to a CD player and Energy Refcon 22's, yikes!!! There's something I never thought I'd say!

I think I'll keep the Scott 299B hooked to the Onkyo Tuner and my JVC Turntable for myself. What a bizzare mix of audio vintages! Yeah, the rack is getting full... but I digress;

The Onkyo is an excellent DX unit even on my indoor antenna, selective &, musical. Only gripe I would say is the AM section is a bit flat, but then, that is in comparison to the FM side, which is just so darn good! (my 340b doesn't even have AM, so it beats that hands down)

The rotary tuning knob is a god send, as is the 30 presets that you can mix and match AM & FM presets. The RDS feature is pretty wild, showing on the digital display info of: the artist, song titles, station ID's, etc. Too cool for school!

Can't imagine what this thing would do with a decent outdoor antenna. I've had to whittle down stations to the genre of music I like, because even 30 presets turns out to be a little short. WOW!

My Scott 340B receiver has a very respectable tube FM tuner, and the Onkyo flat kills it in terms of selectivity, sensitivity & signal to noise but is on par as to musicality. The Scott sounds very good with a strong isolated signal, but even then, the Onkyo is quieter and has better bass and less sibilance. Bottom line - I'm one happy camper! This is an awesome tuner! Highly recommended, at least to this layman's ears.:music::tresbon:.

Nice find! I have a 4310 that was modded by Don Scott and yes, it's a great tuner. It really pulls in stations and is very selective. Excellent sounding too. Don did some Cap replacements and installed an IEC socket. Haven't tried AM so I can't comment.

I LOVE my Onkyo tuners!
Wonderful sound, really excellent sounding tuners.
2 T-9 and a T-4090 analog tuners.

I've wondered about the 4310... I have an Onkyo T-4711, which looks almost the same, and it is one excellent machine. I'd like to compare these two to the T-9090II. I think they'd give the king a run for its money on dxing.

You'd definitely enjoy having a roof-mounted antenna. Put it on a rotor, if you're going to bother. Aside from channels adjacent to local IBOC stations, there's something on just about every frequency, all the time.

Thanks Y'all! Yeah, I've considered an outdoor antennae but man do I have trees... Big oaks that cascade right over the house, heh. I've seen some omni directional FM ones that look like just a straight fiberglass wirewound pole. Stick it straigh up and don't need to worry about the direction it's pointing. Any thoughts?

Do you have enough room on your roof for a directional antenna? The 6 element Antennacraft FM-6 is about 70 inches long and works pretty good. It's not as effective as an APS-13, probably the best, but that thing is huge. OTOH, since you now get >30 stations with an indoor antenna, maybe you can get by with an omni. I think I've seen the one you mention on Ebay but know nothing about it. Usually they're turnstile type antennas. An omni won't be nearly as effective for DXing as a directional with a rotor. I was looking at a map of Florida and besides Tampa-St Pete it seems you would need a good directional antenna to pick up anything else far away.

This is what I'm using. Considerably shorter and less expensive than the big FM units, if you're interested in local TV, too. I consistently get listenable 50kw stations 100 miles away, 10 kw 80 miles.

Trees or not, the more antenna, the more stations you'll get.

Tuners:
TU-X1, KT-5020, T-80, Luxman T-02, MR74, TU-800, FT-1-k, Audio Refinement, F-93, Onkyo T4310,4711, ST-9030

How would you rate your list for sensitivity/selectivity?

I have the FM-6 feeding my Onkyo T-4500. I replaced the ceramic filters with modern Muratas with considerable improvement, too. EXCELLENT!

I picked up an Onkyo T-4087 for my older son, did the same filter mod, and it works as well as my T-4500.

Well, actually I haven't yet listened to most of them since many are recent purchases. The TU-X1 and Kenwood KT-5020 are currently set up. I've also listened to my Fanfare FT-1-k and Onkyo T-4310. So far the Sansui is the king of RF which I expected of course. Followed by the 4310 and then the 5020. The Fanfare is a bit of a disapointment. I have high hopes for the 4711 and Technics ST-9030 (being an 8 ganger). I've also owned a Roksan Caspian which had good sensitivity but poor selectivity due to its single IF bandwidth. What helps the Sansui is having that handy noise filter although it does attenuate the highs slightly. I plan on having the MR74 modded for better RF performance. Oops, I almost forgot one of the best buys in tuners, the Yamaha T-80 which ranks along side the 4310, another best buy.

Just checking... in my hunt for the 'ultimate' dx machine.

I've owned Yamahas: T-85, TX-1000, TX-950, and T-80, and an Onkyto T-4711. The Onkyo (which I've kept) beat them all for sensitivity and selectivity, at least on FM.

That's good news about the 4711. I look forward to setting it up. Having that remote is nice too. I also have high hopes for the Pioneer F-93, reputed to have terrific sensitivity.

The F-93 is a really nice looking unit. I've hesitated getting one for a couple of reasons... it's usually more than I want to pay, and I've read somewhere it doesn't have quite the same selectivity (as the Onkyos/Yamahas). Now I can't find that quote, and I've even read one review that said it topped the T-9090II and T-85. "I declare this as the top tuner at getting the weak stations, king of DXing."

So I'll be interested in your observations.

Bumping up a very old thread but I managed to find a user manual for the Pioneer F-93. The selectivity specs in narrow quote 85 dB +/- 300kHz. It also has fine tuning in 10 kHz steps. So this suggests it would be a KILLER DXer and, yes, it should beat the Onkyo T-9090 II!

Regards,
Nick
