No audio from Pioneer DV-59AVi through HDMI with DVD

I just brought home a used Pioneer DV-59AVi. Hooked it up to the older TV and played a dvd through the analog outputs with no problems. Hooked up to the newer TV and no audio from HDMI. Great picture but no sound. I've been through the setup a bunch of times and can't figure out the problem.

I hooked up my cheap Korean player and it works just fine, so I know it's not the amp.

One weird thing is I can't change the HDMI audio output in the setup. It also appears the player thinks my TV is a DVI. Not sure what that means.

Maybe I just have a bum audio output HDMI section? Any suggestions?

This is likely the problem. DVI (Digital Video Interface; still in use in the computer world, although it's becoming deprecated in newer hardware) is the forerunner to HDMI. They are mostly forward and backward compatible (requiring only a simple passive adapter to convert from one plug to the other), except that DVI doesn't include an audio signal. Since you've presumably tested the new TV and HDMI cable with the other player and found that they work fine, the problem would appear to be a defect with the Pioneer, as you've surmised (although not for the same reason). Or it could be some sort of compatibility issue. Do you have another HDMI TV you can test with? Or maybe bring the player over to a friend's house and try it there?

Since you're just sending the signal to your TV, it shouldn't be a problem to use the analog left/right outputs from the player to send to the TV. If it lacks the ability to play analog audio with HDMI video, you can use the component video outputs on the DVD player, assuming your TV has such inputs. Are you planning on using an AV receiver with this system? If so, you can send the HDMI video directly to the TV, and send the digital audio out from the player to one of the optical or coax inputs on the receiver. As a DVD-only player, it lacks the ability to support any of the newer formats such as Dolby TruHD, so the sound quality will be the same as if it was sent via HDMI.

Thanks for the quick response. I actually just plugged it into another, older tv with HDMI and it worked perfectly. Weird. The player was plugged into the front HDMI input in a Yamaha Aventage RX-A1000 AVR attached to a Samsung 3D smart tv through HDMI. So there’s some issue, I would guess with the AVR that thinks the player is connecting to a DVI. The other tv, which the player was directly connected to saw it as HDMI.

After all, the player is 15 years old and it’s probably a little confused. I think I’ll just use it for DVD-Audio and SACDs

What's running through what and when isn't exactly clear to me, but...

If you had the player connected to an AVR by HDMI but expected sound to come from the TV speakers when the AVR is turned on you have to change the HDMI audio setting in the receiver from AMP to TV or something to that effect. Then, if you want HDMI audio and video to the TV when the AVR is off, the receiver has to be capable of HDMI standby pass though and have that set to the proper input (or in some cases "last" if you want the last used source to pass though).

I'm not sure about DVD-Audio, but for SACD, you'll only be able to use the analog outputs of the player. SACD digital signals can only be sent via HDMI.

The player was hooked to the amp and the amp for video pass through to the tv via HDMI like your typical home theater setup. Everything goes through the amp except the Firestick, which is connected directly to the tv. There was no sound from the amp. Something somewhere thinks the display is a DVI, I guess, Nd only passed though video. There is no DVI connection, yet something thinks there is and passed only video to the tv.

It’s the same setup to the other tv (I forgot there was another Yamaha AVR in the chain), yet everything works as it should.

I tried 2 different HDMI connections through the amp and this is the first time I’ve had any connection problem with any player I’ve hooked up through that Aventage receiver, so I have to assume they don’t like each other, and it’s not worth pursuing at this time.

And, yes, I would be using the analog audio outputs only.
