No shows, hypothesize the whys ...

I am sure, if my price was 25% of ebay sold, then I'd have certain shows.
There is a balance of price, timing, and ad aesthetics

I also must admit, I've made / met some great friends on CL and Marketplace. Folks that have similar interests, similar experiences... you know like AK, but with real names and handshakes:biggrin:.

Funny enough, my CL experiences have been overwhelmingly similar, very good experiences. I did have one bizarre experience tho, and it involved a Louisville cop.

That story is better left unsaid, but let's just say it was a tiny bit frightening.

"unloading the 20 year horde...." - I resemble that remark, and will soon have to face that particular music. I share my 1200 sq foot bungalow with the wife and my pit bull Mabel, and I have to admit that the bulk of stuff here is my junk. So many great acquisitions that I have either outgrown, or eclipsed with better gear.

A truly 1st world problem, I feel.

I don't give stuff away, but I do take into consideration I don't have to pay ebay/pay pal, deal with making and listing auctions, boxing/shipping/post office. Took ten minutes to take pictures, write the ad and post on cl from my phone.

I gave up on CL a long time ago.
Around here it’s useless.

Both buyers and sellers with no clue or standards. I have many stories.

I am all eBay and there is some strange stuff there too. The worst is they make an offer, usually low but I accept just to move the stuff. I check listings many times a day so the offer is never that old. Then nothing, no pay. Item is off market until eBay auto bitch kicks in. I have it set to the lowest time setting. Maybe 1 in 10 pay when Ebay steps in. The others just get a no pay ding and then I need to dig up the listing and restart it.

As far as the OP topic. People are just rude and stupid. I see it getting worse with younger people. No consideration for anything outside themselves. Probably a side effect of the whole “be who your are” thing that excuses or defends the “alternative” type personality or lifestyle. It seems like being a rude loud whiney asshole bitching about everything is the next minority to cope with. But they don’t seem like a minority.

Recently I’ve enjoyed experiencing young educated successful professionals attempting to stage social events. What a cluster.

I just think a lot of people want to buy your stuff before checking their own wallet. Who knows, perhaps their significant other steps in and reminds them they have bills to pay or something.

It's also why I never hold anything for anyone, unless I'm paid in full upfront.

I just had to tell someone a couple weeks ago that couldn't hold something even with a deposit, but I did give him the option of purchasing the item outright and I would then hold it until he could pick it up.

Today he drove all the way from Cincinnati to pick up his purchase. Nice

Right? People are expecting me to take a car off the market just because they've expressed interest. While others negotiate every last detail over phone & email and then vanish without a word.

Lately I've learned that buyers will claim to eBay that someone hacked their account in order to perform detailed haggling with me over the course of several days, and eBay believes them so they get no strike.

Once upon a time, airlines in this country could offer 'bereavement fares' for people who had a death in the family and had to travel at a moment's notice. Then they started to get abused by people who can't think beyond their own immediate desires at any time. Result: no more bereavement fares. Note to spectrum inhabitants: yes I know a couple airlines still 'say' they offer them, but they're in name only--space available at regular rates.

Originally bereavement fares were offered no-questions-asked, which amazes younger people today. Then you had to sign a statement, then you had to provide funeral-home info, then they started withdrawing the option entirely. Because some people started going to the trouble of faking the certifications, and airlines don't have the manpower to track down every single instance.

The solution is to keep miles in your FF acct. They can be used at the last minute--except, airlines are now charging an extra fee for last-minute mileage fares. Still better than paying retail. Another option is flying first-class, which is often the same price at the last minute as it was in advance. Domestically only, I mean.

I was doing the exclusive Ebay thing for a while until it became painfully obvious that Ebay certainly favors the buyers over the sellers. I was shooting for becoming a power seller but I couldn't keep a full time job and deal with the Ebay volume. Many bad experiences, that really cut into revenue. There are many thieves on eBay.

I've had a completely different experience with age groups...
I'd say that it is the under 30 crowd who are more honorable on CL & FB. It's the 30-50 folk that I've had the most issue with... maybe they see online promises as hollow, and don't care about social ethics. This is my own age group, and I'm flummoxed.
I also know that my local area is flooded with flippers, and expect the first five contacts to be ten-dollar-low-baller types.
I am surprised and optimistic about the young crowd that I encounter. I live close to a college town, and the hipsters that have an eye for Audio around here are very chill, never haggle, and pay and show promptly...

I have to agree with the age thing. This last sell I did, I'm guessing early 20s, I even threw in a little extra stuff because he kept me informed on his drive and showed up when he said. (Also helped get stuff out of here)

I'm selling a bunch of stuff on CL and FB.
If it wasn't big and heavy, I'd use Bartertown.

I've had 4 out of 4 scheduled "buyers" not show today. I understand the busy modern life, but why express interest, set up a meeting time, then nada?

I'm even doing the "keyboard negotiations". This is when someone wants to dicker by texts. I fully expect to then be beat-up again when they show... if they show.

Why is this so prevalent today? Was it like this 50 years ago? Does social media facilitate this?

Not wanting this to be a rant. Let's make it a "social study"
opioids....

I get a lot of flake outs here in pitt, more so than anywhere I ever have and heck, in many cases I am GIVING stuff away as I remodel the house...

Probably has to do with the life experience level. The younger folk havn't been screwed over enough yet to get the "everybody else is doing it" attitude yet.

If this is part of it, then boo on them! Life experience is suppose to teach you the importance of behavior, and to lead by example.

I'm more excited to see Audio excitement in younger people. This might lead to me being more giving when it comes to cables, wires, record brushes etc...
Is this reverse Agism?
