Yesterday thereabouts, the PA state police (PSP) released new DUI info. in 2019 they started the first year of specifically capturing what kind of DUI they are finding.

In 2019 22% of DUIs were under the 'I' of drugs. in 2020, yeah, plague year, it was 28%. So far as we near the mid point of 2021 its a hair under 42%

Now I dont wanna be a naysayer, but the interwebs is full of terrabytes of information where the proponents of legal drugs and medical pot swore up and down on a stack of bibles 'no, we would never EVER do that' (toke and drive or pop and drive or inject and drive...you get the point)

Well yeah, apparently they do.....

(and we foolishly wonder why new job applicants today cannot pass the piss test....)

so next time you see someone weaving out of traffic and you are about to yell out 'what are you? on drugs or something?' the answer just might be: yes

I agree, but people always show up for work hung over. I send people back to the hotel without pay ONCE if and when that happens. Not an issue if they were smoking the night before.
you said the word rigging....in my state, that implies an operating or engineering license with regular surprise piss tests....not so the case in NC?

Alcohol is still worse. And kills far more than dope. I do not defend altered driving in any form. Your "I told you so" viewpoint doesn't save one life.

Yeah well one has been legal for a long time and one hasn't. As pot is legalized and it encourages more and more useage, those numbers will shift. (the OP already touched on that.)

TBH your viewpoint doesn't save any lives either. Mostly it appears as a back door approval of altered driving in one form in spite of your claims otherwise. Put differently, I'm sure the family of someone killed by a person under the influence of pot would be relieved to hear that it's not as bad as alcohol.

Rigging as in removing a 7500# Motor Generator Rotor from a Submarine, changing shock mounts under a Marine Gas Turbine enclosure. So yes randoms are possible but it’s up to the company, typically it will happen if there is an “incident” but that is mostly up to the Deck Plate Manager (me). And we work all over the world... have yet to work in NC :)

So in spite of a statement to the contrary you contend I support the assholes who have killed several of my friends. You couldn't be more wrong. And say whatever you wish I'll not see it. Buh-bye now.

have not found all the stats, but yeah that post caused a flick of the eyebrows as well. a few years back, from what I have found so far, there were 280 alcohol related deaths in pittsburgh (oxy capitol) but 551 drug deaths. not crashes, not busts...deaths for all reasons. remove narcan and that 551 quadruples with ease. we can call that 2:1 as more likely to die from drugs, than booze in pitt, and now that caught, busted, pinched driving occurrences are close to running neck and next. as always, the user(s) defend themselves with 'we can handle it, its no big deal' and they called nancy a crackpot to this day for 'just say no'. can never say no in the ME world.

The acceptable meme in and around pitt today are couple of oxy (or perhaps some meth) and a bottle of hard liquor. check out of reality friday night, vomit your guts out sunday, get some food, go to bed to ready for work monday. lather rinse repeat. dea says 30% of the 18-50 key demo participate weekly. I can believe it...

I just assume they're under the influence of cell phones.

It's legal so it follows that more people smoke (or ingest) it. Now that you no longer need to know "a guy" and it comes in cute little multi-colored gummy bears, it has become dorky. I was a fan of decriminalizing it for years. Heck, now even Clarence Thomas wants to end the fed laws on it.

I'm guessing here and veering into Venn diagram territory, but I reckon most potheads drink, but many drinkers don't toke.

The std drug test is a 5 panel that tests for THC, Opiates, PCP, Cocaine, and Amphetamines. The data presented here doesn't show which of the drugs were present. The problem with this test is that in some cases, you can't tell when the drug was consumed because the metabolites take so long to exit the body. It could be hours, days or weeks with THC.

While driving under the influence of anything is not good, I'd think the increase is probably in the opiate and amphetamine class but the data presented in the OPs post doesn't differentiate.

THC breathalyzers are on their way. Patents have been issued. Field tests are happening. I think the big issue will be about what levels indicate `intoxicated' or 'under the influence'. Tolerances vary widely. But technology is catching up and it's only a matter of time before pee and blood tests are a thing of the past.
