nubie question on lafayette 1000b

First post. Was wondering about a lr-1000b Lafayette I just picked up. Plugged in and all outputs work as should but I have no lights except for Phono Aux Mon. Seems I should have lights to see frequency dial?? Any help appreciated

Try and download or purchase the Service Manual or if not, remove the cover and inspect the fuse-type lamps and bulbs to see if you can get spec's for the voltage and current readings on them? But your best bet is to get a Service Manual or hopefully someone will chime in that has already replaced them on your particular model. Lafayette, a vintage manufacturer of some pretty cool :thmbsp: audio equipment, IMHO. I have a Lafayette LT-D10 Tuner.

Also contact fellow AK'er dgwojo, he's the go to member that can help you out with bulbs, lamps, etc. and hopefully be able to find out exactly what you need?

Carefully remove the fuse-type lamp, look closer (use a magnifyer?) at either end, there should be an indication of voltage and current? Example: 12V .3A
If so, then see how many others there are for the dial scale and replace them all with exactly the same? As for the specific other indicator lamps such as Stereo, Aux, etc. you will more than likely need to get either the Service Manual or Schematic for more detailed info on those?


I took the top cover off and cannot spot a bulb anywhere. I do see a fuse on left side but no bulbs.

Thank you guys. I finally got it all apart and replaced all the bulbs including the stereo and acritune bulbs.In the mean time I've been looking at some other receivers. I think this Lafayette will be a great practice unit what do you think?
 
I am not familiar with any Lafayette pieces. Don't even know if it is tube or SS. Some pics of the internals would be nice. Good advice given in the 2nd post here to get the SM especially if you want to practice on it :)
 
Yeah, should be perfectly decent in all respects; I suspect the tuner will be better than average for its era and place in the food chain (next to the top of the LRE line, it should've been).

I have a soft spot in my heart for the LRE electronics for some inexplicable reason. The only one I have is an LR-1500TA, though. Probably just as well!
 
thanks Hardy. The receiver does receive well but I have an issue with a ground I think. When I first power on the unit I hear static on the right channel for about 30 seconds, it then goes away. I will also hear it when I unplug the unit for only about 10 seconds, any ideas?

I just grabbed one of these from a local thrift shop. Mint condition. Have not even powered it up yet, figuring that I would check here first for info. Please explain why you think this unit is only putting out 25 watts per channel....150 watts at 4ohms would be 75 watts per channel, yes? Wouldn't the power rating only be slightly lower at 8 ohms? if I'm reading this ad right then I've got 75 per channel going out to a pair of 4 ohm speakers....
 
Jay; Watts sells gear. In 1974 there was a FTC ruling that required all manufacturers to change over from IHF (Music power or Peak Watts channels combined) to separate RMS wattage readings with a challenging pre-conditioning period (or loading setup) prior to testing. The FTC felt that wattage ratings were getting way out of hand and a lot of rigs were overly inflated with regard to wattage ratings. The FTC RMS ratings are actually more in line with what the unit is capable of continuously, not a peak power rating.

So take the 150w @ 8 ohms and 1/2 it. 75 watts per channel. Then estimate between 1/3 to 1/4 of the one channel result, for between 19 to 25watts per channel RMS. This leveled the playing field considerably, and for quite a few manufacturers cut their legs out from under them. IHF watts are usually @ 1 frequency, 4 or 8 ohms, and taken as a pulse or PEAK wattage. RMS is taken as 20Hz to 20KHz, 8 or 4 ohms (both sometimes), and at a continuous signal. Not easy as it sounds. A lot of amps and receivers couldn't finish the pre-conditioning testing at 1st. Pre-conditioning was IIRC, a 1 hour warm up @ 30% of Max wattage (most taxing level for the amps) and if it passed it was run thru the rest of the testing. Take a Sansui 2000A or X for instance. Pre 1974 Sansui sold them with a 200-watt IHF rating. After 1974 they wer re-rated to 36 and 39watts.

The wattage wars didn't start in 1974, they started back in the 50's when HI-FI got it's collective ass in gear and started with all those great tube amps from that era. Even 2-3watts back then was big news. So you can imagine what happened when transistors came around and the engineers found they could add watts with more transistors and bigger circuits(overly simplified). Someone had to rein them in.

Very very few Japanese Receivers before 1974 had more than 50W RMS per channel(200W - 250W IHF). The higher end ones no more than 50W. But most were in the 20-40 watt range due to technical advances or lack of them with the transistors. As Silicon transistors got better so did the gear with regard to Wattage. When PIONEER brought out the SX-1010 all hell broke loose. Suddenly everyne was trying to get above that magic 100W #. Some did it very well, some busted. Personally I like the 20-50Watt receivers better than the higher wattage ones.

That's the short version.
