Oh, Beloved Jewel Box, How I Loathe Thee!

I buy the half thickness replacement plastic boxes. They open easier, but can't have end label. Can store double number in the cd racks.

Of all the the things to bitch & moan about - plastic Cd boxes! I remember LP covers which deteriorated with use to the point that they were only good for cleaning seeds from pot.

I immediately throw the jewel cases away (recycler bin), and replace with these. They take up far less space.
Actually, I don't buy many CD's, and replaced all the commericial release jewel cases years ago. I also keep all of my live recording data discs in these same sleeves, and have not had any problems with them going on 17+ years now.

No edge label means I can't find anything on my shelves. That's a no-go for me.

People have been complaining about CD jewel boxes pretty much from the dawn of the CD. I've had dozens of jewel boxes break at the hinges, which is maybe their weakest point. I've also had dozens arrive in my mailbox already cracked, and I have dozens on my shelves that are cracked, either in the outer lids or in the hub. I do not handle CD's or jewel boxes roughly. In fact, I'm Captain Anal when it comes to CD handling, so in my opinion there's plenty to complain about. On the other hand, although cardboard LP (or CD) jackets may age and lose their freshness after awhile, I've never had one actually fail. Paper LP sleeves though, do tend to be a pain due to just being made on the cheap.

mfrench,
You have a good system. Could save a lot on space.

I'm almost out of "spares". Used to have quite a few, 'cause years ago a couple of friends and I made a multimedia CD-ROM mainly for the Mac, which we couldn't really sell, as we didn't have the money to make enough for the vendors to be worth of advertising it (that would have required at least 10000 pcs., and we just had 2000 made...). So in the end we only sold a fraction and hence had a lot left to be used as future replacement covers (with an extra plastic beer mat in each). I didn't grab all too many, though, and now I'm down to less than 10 left...

Greetings from Munich!

I put every cd in a Caselogic book immediately. I still buy about 350 cds per yr. Each book holds about 50 to 100 so they don't take up much room.

My complaint with the cardboard sleeves is many times it's a really tight fit. You take the chance of scratching the CD trying to get a grip on it to remove it.

I bought three Sony 400-disc CD/DVD/SACD players years ago. All my jewel boxes - about 1000 - are in boxes in the attic. I never take CDs out of the players, so works well for us, providing easy, remote-control access, too. No longer buy CDs but have some slots for inadvertent growth.

I jumped on this bandwagon a while ago also... except my inadvertent growth caused me to buy three more. Great. That was 4 years ago and now I have 1200 CDs in perfect order, and another 1200 hodge-podged in slots that leave me needing a month to reprogram and re alphabetize. Yep I have the keyboard attachment too... I just can't find the discipline.

I like the OPs idea about a sleeve. If only we had another round disc recorded medium to get some ideas from...hmmm.
