Those were mine at the fest.

Recently hooked them back up in the garage system after not listening to them for a couple years. Forgot just how good they are.

In stock form such as the one's pictured. They are power hungry monsters. They will need at least 150 watts, really happy with 250 watts or more. If you get the sub-bass activators from Ohm on the low and high woofers it will even out the impedance swings and you can drive them with a 35 watt tube amp. The low tweeter and high tweeter are also worth while upgrades. I did entire upgrade path from ohm, with the exception of the crossover upgrade. I checked with Ohm and they just recapped the crossover with original values. So that's what I did myself with better caps they what they would have used. All upgrades made improvements on an all ready great speaker. The ones mentioned above made more of difference than the others.

Even the guys at Ohm said it would take 4 grand to better the Ohm I with one of their current offerings. We A/B's the fully upgraded Ohm I's with Ohm Walsh 4's upgraded to the current Walsh 5 driver and it was very debatable what was the better sounding speaker. Both very good and quite different sounding. I had the I's at 3 different fests all three they were in a different stages of upgrade. So not sure what year you heard them and how you heard them.

Is that the Craigslist pair? I live in Hillsborough, was vaguely considering making an offer, but I need another pair of speakers like I need a hole in my head.Hope you get them, if so post, your impressions....

I have a pair of Ohm I's as well, but they haven't been updated like Punker's. I've listened to his and they sound much better than mine - if you buy them, consider the upgrades discussed above.

Can someone elaborate on the sub-bass activators? Is that a woofer upgrade, some bass electronic equalizer, some new technological development? I have a pair of I's also, but mine are still original.

Yes, this is the same pair. I made an offer and he accepted. I go them home now, but have not listened to them. They are in real nice shape.

The sub-bass activator is a board with a bunch of components that attach to the magnet of the two woofers. It's all spray painted black, so hard to tell whats going on. Some type of EQ and impedance matching network. I didn't notice a huge difference in the bass when I upgraded these, but I did notice the meters on my amps were going as crazy trying to drive these monsters. If you have questions, you can usually talk with John (the owner) at Ohm just by calling their 1-800 number. In fact he usually answers the phone himself.

i have upgraded H's, and unfortunately it's really hard to see much about the SBA unless you pull the woofer, which i haven't done yet. i was under the impression they put a high pass filter (aka cap) in there to cut off bass below the usable point. besides that, i figured they put some kind of equalizing or resonating circuit in there, but those usually make a speaker harder to drive, and it doesn't seem like you've noticed that with the I. now you've got me really curious, i think i'll pull a woofer later.

Has anyone reverse engineered the SBA modules for the Ohm I's? I'm interested in trying them on my I's, but definitely not at the prices that Ohm is asking.
The power hungry nature of un-modded I's doesn't bother me as I have 3-4 amps that are up to the task. I'm only interested in how the SBAs affect the sound.
From the description, it seems like given a schematic one could build them for 1/10 of what Ohm is asking.
