ok to swap out a 12au7 for a 12ax7?

I have a schematic I am working on uses an EF86 and a 12au7 in the preamp stage. Since the 12au7 and the 12ax7 have the same pinout, is it ok to simply substitute the 12ax7 for 12au7?

I tried to find a clear answer in the archives but I was unsuccesful.

Well you not going to damage anything by trying it , a 12AX7 has more gain , but a 12AU7 has more current drive . If they are using the 12AU7 as an emiter followers you might not notice any differeance .
 
These two tubes are too different to work in the same circuit. You won't achieve anything other than huge amount of distortions.
 
I grew up in the age of tubes and saw that swap many times. It depends upon the circuit as whether it will work or not. If you have the 12AU7 go ahead and try it. You will not damage anything. If you can tell a difference decide if you like the change or not. If you can't tell the difference then you are good to go.
