OLA woofers

Picked up a pair of utility cabinet OLA's today for only $25. But they have old Pyle woofers in them, not the original Advent woofers. Also, the Pyles both need refoaming. Not sure about the quality of Pyle speakers, but I'm guessing they're not up to Advent standards. And, unfortunately, despite what the seller told me, there's only one working fried egg tweeter between the two speakers.

There is a seller nearby me who's got a single walnut OLA speaker which he'll sell for $50. That should should take care of the tweeter issue, but is the walnut OLA speaker somehow different from the utility cabinet woofer? I ask this because I see listings online where the OLA woofer for sale is specifically labeled "utility Advent woofer".

Of course, even if the woofer is compatible, I'll still need yet another OLA woofer. Bad luck recently with buying speakers with DOA drivers. (The Advents did come with two external custom slide-in-speaker wood cabinets, though, which are pretty interesting.)

The OLA woofers are what make the Advent an Advent. They are integral to the design, so it sounds to me like you need to find two. Advent OLA tweeters are the same in both the walnut and utility versions.
 
If you paid to become a "subscriber" in "Barter Town" you could post a wanted to buy for a pair of OLA woofers.
Those woofers are known for their base response.
 
Same woofer for the vinyl clad (utility) and veneered walnut cabinets. The OLA woofer has the Masonite ring around the outside, subsequent versions of the woofer did not.

Thanks for the responses. I should have asked the seller how Pyle car speakers ended up in the cabinets.
 
FWIW, the later metal Advent woofers should also fit. I believe that Advent used them as drop in replacements. Just make sure they didn't butcher the cabinets installing those Pyles.
 
The all-metal woofer will work in an original cabinet but not the other way around. The mounting hole is just slightly larger in the original Advent cabinets. Just make sure you have the woofers well sealed.

And yes, whether the cabinet is a walnut veneered version or utility version makes no difference. Same drivers.

And, the Pyle drivers got into the Advents because somebody had no idea what they were doing.

Well, I really messed things up getting things together. I got the lone speaker from the local seller, then another woofer from Kirk57 (thanks, Kirk), but now I realize that the lone speaker I purchased is a NLA, not the OLA (I think the seller thought it was an OLA, and I didn't know any better, either). :eek: So there would be a tweeter mismatch if I use the NLA tweeter in one of the utility cabinets, plus maybe a crossover issue, too. (The NLA woofer is not the inverted surround, but I don't think that would be an issue, though I might be wrong on that as well).

All this time I thought the lone speaker was simply an OLA in a bullnose cabinet, but it's the NLA in a bullnose cabinet. OLA's must have the original fried egg tweeters and not the NLA tweeter, right? Listening to the NLA and the OLA side by side, the NLA tweeter sounds sharper, with the stereo balance slightly favoring it, though I have not recapped anything.

As I understand it, one can use an OLA tweeter with the NLA crossover. Perfect? Maybe not.
However, the NLA tweeter is not built to go as low as the OLA tweeter, so using the NLA tweeter with the OLA crossover will probably be more likely to have issues, like a blown tweeter when you turn up the volume.
