Believe it or not but Sting's been in over 20 movies. His debut was Quadrophenia (1979).

There is so much going on in Dune that its damn difficult to put into a movie of any sort of reasonable length. I think splitting it in two like the current one is doing is the way to get it done. The original material is also sort of dry in how its written, and IMO doesn't really do a good job of explaining all the politics and powers in play. There is a whole lot of "who is this, why are they doing that, and why should I care about it?" sort of moments.

Which is why I have never wanted to read this book. The movies have done nothing to change my opinion.

Seems like a strange thing to say, but there are a lot of great stories that are badly written, and there are lousy stories that are very well written. I've never been inspired to read any of the other Dune novels, though I understand that its a great story. Just not overly partial to Frank Herbert's writing style.

Seems like sacrilege but I have a hard time with Tolkien as well. Great stories, incredibly dry writing.

Not strange at all. I just want the “whole package” in a book, if I am going to read it. Also, the story itself, does not interest me. Maybe it is the story that is dry, and not Herbert’s writing style? I would much rather read Burroughs, John Carpenter of Mars books.

As for Tolkien, I have never read his hobbit books. I did watch the first three movies, once.

That might be too, don't know.

E.R. Burroughs was a lot more engaging to read, I'll give you that. HG Welles and Jules Verne were also more readable in most cases. In the modern era I really like Brandon Sanderson. He does some extremely long-form epic fantasy stuff but its engaging and fun to actually read, not just a slog through a bunch of words that suck the enjoyment out of it.

Whew... glad that's cleared up, thought @ first we were talkin' William Burroughs.

To me, Dune was a very engaging read. I burned through it in one sitting. To be fair, I was home sick that day, and it was the only thing I felt like doing.

Now, Dune vs Dune; while not great, I like the original better. Mainly since I saw it first. If I'd only seen the current Dune, I'm sure it would be my favorite. Though I do like Kyle Mclaughlin's performance as Paul better. More serious and more intelligent. Not skipping around like the new Paul. Plus, the new Dune felt like a remake of the first movie, as opposed to a new version of the book.

Ornithopters much much better now. That alone, saved the new Dune for me.

As to Edgar Rice Burroughs, a huge fan. But for the life of me, I've never heard of the "John Carpenter of Mars books". Until I can find those, I'll read the John Carter books. :D

I must have missed typed and autocorrect tried to save me, miserably.

Wow, ;what a good short description. While I did enjoy the book, it was a bit of an effort to figure out what all was going on.
Compare to Battlefield Earth - another large book, lots of power plays going on - but so much easier for me to understand and track. LOL, but the movie was atrocious. I actually like it in a campy sort of way.

The old movie introduced the "Weirding Module". Sorry, that was a non-starter for me. It was goofy with that sneeze noise they made when using it. New movie was better for me.

I liked both the book and movie despite all their baggage.
