Old electrolytic cap: unobtainable?

Hi again. Working on an old German receiver and wondered if anyone knows a source for this style can?

Mounts through the chassis with a latge nut on the other side. Other alternatives are re-stuff or retrofit. It's 50uf+50uf@450/500v. Can is negative. Thanks.

oh, those. I have a couple things with that setup, including a pre-war radio. I'd also like to know of a new source, but I suspect you're left with stuffing or enlarging the hole to use a clamp-in cap. The few I've dealt with I've just abandoned the can in place and stuffed a modern cap underneath.

Yeah. I'm thinking using a step bit to enlarge the holes and clamping a couple F&Ts in place. No slack to pull so that would be the logical solution. They read fine for capacitance but the receiver has what sounds like a power supply hum. Better safe than sorry.

If its leaky or has high ESR it won't filter effectively even if its on value for capacity. my ancient tester calls ESR "power factor" and rates it in cap efficiency but its the same concept.

Yes, they made those in the USSR up to the 1990s. You can sometimes find them on eBay. The Russian ones are usually single section, though.

You might try one of the military surplus or electronic surplus outfits. They might have some. If you are not too concerned with stock appearance i usually glue on a JJ or something similar or use a clamp on a JJ .

The only ones I have come from a Russian Rigonda radiogram, i.e. Console. Is yours definitely bad?

they usually only have one or two caps in them,,, pretty easy to uncrimp and re stuff. if you want the look...

They weren't that uncommon back when. Even Tektronix used them in some of the big boat anchor units, maybe the 575 curve tracer if I remember right.

Don't know for sure if they are bad. I did find a bad small value electrolytic on the board. I think I'll change the 6 small electrolytics then set it on the variac. Maybe the two big ones can reform...

Yeah I've done some re-stuffing but I can get new F&Ts for a couple dollars more and just open the chassis holes up with a step bit. Less work. It's not a high value piece but it looks very cool.

Hi. You can find these on the Authenticap site. Thank Brice...
