Old Tube amps? From where?

I fixed it Frannie. The best SS I have (that sounds a lot like a really good tube amp) is a Sansui AU919, and a rebuild on one of those, done right, is around 1K. Worth every penny too IMHO.

Well, now that I think about it, I do like Hovlands, Auricaps, and Kimbers which are all yellow, but it's those IC jobs that keep filling up my shop trash can (which is actually an old metal Hickok scope box).

Just my opinion, old tube gear always sounds better than SS... I own a restored Fisher 800C and a restored Fisher amp X202B. Nothing could replace them in my opinion..

Good luck finding anything worth while in tubes in a thrift store.. You might find an old console, but most places don't even want to take them... I've been doing thrifts for years and have yet to find a tubed amp in one..

You might find an old organ, but not often at a thrift either... so there's your choices.. an old organ amp, or an old console to pull from..

Just to add my 2 cents... I was in the same boat as the OP. I wanted to see what the tube issue was all about. I had my eye on one of these http://store.tubedepot.com/diy-k12g.html. They seem highly regarded, especially for their price range. Plus, there is a lot of info on the web about upgrading them.

That looks like a really interesting amp, with a little custom top plate, it could be perfect. I really wish I had enough experience to build something like that. :worried:

Any left over (especially .22uf and .47uf), I can use 'em too.

The best-sounding Magnavox mod I've done, has those type caps for input coupling and preamp stage caps. They beat out Wondercaps, for balance...
