One GREAT system, or multiple GOOD systems?

Just curious-

What do you folk aim for?

One ultimate system, and mediocre systems at work, bedroom, office, etc...

Or multiple good systems in each place?

For me, I prefer spreading the wealth evenly between multiple systems than all on one.

I listen equally to music in the kitchen, bedroom and living room, so all three are equally good, a slight favoring of the living room setup.

I could sell off the other systems outside of the living room and upgrade, but that means superior music in one room, noteably inferior in others.

One exception- after numerous "mysterious" failures of my numerous work systems, when I'm not there and "mysteriously" I come back to blown amps or speakers, I keep that one humble.

But how about you folk?

Can you run one great system and tolerate mediocracy in the others?

What do you prefer?

Only two rigs here Paul, and both are equally fine in my opinion.....neither is super duper high end but neither sucks too bad :D In general, my mission is to have the best gear I can....that I can afford....that sounds best to me. :thmbsp:

Having worked as plant maintenance manager for quite a while......we would "lock-out, tag-out" equipment we worked on. Consider a lockout box, put the end of the cord from your work stereo in the lockout box, lock it, and BINGO.. no more blown drivers etc. You'll come back to work and find it just as you left it. :thmbsp::yes:

Best,

Paul :thmbsp:

That can easily be bypassed by a "custom" double male plug into the unswitched outlet on the back of the amp/receiver. :D

One excellent performer and if I can afford it a second very good performing system for my home office. That's what I have now.

I can tolerate less at work because I can't really fully enjoy a great system there.

Same in a car- I'm a windows down type of guy, except for winter, and also was a former bicycle and motorcycle commuter.

For the home, since I divide my time nearly equally with all three systems, I want GOOD sound in them all.

I could go cheaper in two, and upgrade a single system, but I still can only listen to it 1/3 of the time.

I prefer one awesome (IMO) system over s few mediocre ones. Mostly because i dont have alot of cash. But i do like to have "real" systems throughout my house.

One Great System

I'm amazed at the people on AK that have dozens of cheap to middle line speakers and other components. I get that it's a fun hobby to search for and collect different items for cheap.
I don't have the space for much gear and would rather listen to the best sound I can afford. What I have is a perpetual delight to sit back and enjoy. One system does it all. :thmbsp:

Your never going to get just one system that can do it all. No matter how much you can spend.

Edit: What do you have Carbonman? I'm defiantly curious.

I have something that's not offensive in my bedroom. It's there so I can watch TV and movies in bed. Other than that I have one good (to me) system. I'm recently retired and currently single. I spend most of my time in my listening room. It used to be my living room and dining room. I knocked down a wall and made one listening room. I has to be fairly good sized as my system serves for 2 channel and movies etc. With 4 ESL's and 3 subs I need a good sized room. When playing 2 channel I use the gear listed in my sig.

I love the gear as much as the music. That keeps me in the multiple good system camp rather than the one super system. To each their own and this is what floats my boat.

There are just so many different aspects to music that I find enjoyable, I can't grasp the concept of one system doing it all. I even got different speakers in the same system, for different musical genre, or times of day.......... (Night/Day).

Not sure anything can beet a single driver unit, past midnight.

If your not experimenting, your loosing.

I have four 2 channel systems and three different 5 channel systems. The main systems are better than their counterparts with the secondary systems more specialize for the purpous they serve. Example, I don't need a system that will blow the doors off the house for late night listening but I want detail. On the other hand,I don't need detail in the garage, I need something that I don't mind tortouring with dirt and extreme temperature changes.

I run several systems and like them all. I chase rabbits and could never settle for one idea. I use the top down upgrade approach. Which means I focus my attention on improveing the top couple of systems and then move good gear down through the ranks making everthing better.

Great approach. Me too............

Main focus has to be the office system where I do most of my listening. And I put together what I thought would be pleasant and listenable for baby Violet. Living room (still working on finding a place for it) -- I kind of stumbled into some gear that happened to sound good together so that is what I'll run with for now. Garage system was just leftovers, but now have lots of spare gear so have am building up something much better so now can start to sell off some gear I know I won't need. I will try to trickle down gear where I can... but am constrained by different needs of the different systems.

I'll go out on the limb, and say there isn't any such thing as one great system. There are indeed great systems, but not one that can do it all.

This'll be tough to sort out as what some people consider great, others consider merely good.... :lurk:

There's no wrong solution here. Just preference.

Just interested if one great system or multiple good systems are your preferred.

If all my listening was done in one area, I'd say I'd be more inclined to run one great system.

But since I do nearly equal listening, I can't opt for 2/3rds the time listening to passable hifi, 1/3 fantastic.

I want good sound all the time and will trade off a bit of one system superiority for multi-system quality across the board.

I aim for one "great" system. I also like to have other "good" systems, mainly because I have several rooms that need systems, and because I get a kick out of the variety of vintage items to be had. I even have a place for a "lame" system, just because it's comprised of several of my very first pieces ever owned. (think the level of VM record changer with ceramic cartridge) Pure nostalgia there.
