Onkyo M-508 & 504 Power Cord Help Factory 16 AWG?

Hopefully not a silly question but here goes. I never paid much attention to the size of the power cords on these amps until I recently purchased a set of Infinity Kappas 8.1 version.

My question is on both amps the power cord is 16 gauge, basically lamp cord. That small of wire I believe is rated close to 12 amps max, would it benefit my system to upgrade the power cords alone or is this just a hope of mine that it may help?

Thanks for any help provided, Jack

What size is your mains fuse on the 508 and 504 ? 6-7amp @120vac.

Mouser has new strain relief grommets in just about any size required.I think I bought the new cords from them as well.

Hey neighbor, ha. ha. there are no external fuses on the back of these. I'll pop the lid tomorrow and take a look.

Is there a relation as to the cord and the current that the amp is capable of producing? I'm just wondering how the m-508 will do to drive the 8.1's on such a small line cord. Will I see any difference as to what the amp is capable of or is that pretty well set by it's internal?

Thanks

You might see a difference, but the internal fuse is 7A so that limits the power draw from the AC line.

Any idea what amperage the 508 is capable of? I'm asking because from what I have read it is better to drive the infinity Kappas with an amp with a high current capability. I have not inserted them into the system yet as I just picked them up today.

Yep I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff, but I sure like to listen to my music!

8.1's aren't the low impedance nightmare of their predecessors, so the Onkyo 508/504 should be a fine match. They develop sufficient current.

Thanks for the input, I will give them a listen tomorrow. They are going in a large room, 20' x 25' so I will be interested to see how they do.

The fuses are ultimately the "limiting factor" in the equation, and as already posted, they will blow well before the line cord fails. Will you experience or hear a difference with an "upgraded" power cord?--IDK--only you can tell. I use some fairly pricey 10 ga power cords on my Krells and Aragons, but the Krells draw 8A each at idle (pure class A SS monoblocs)--more under load.

I don't want this thread to turn into the debate over $$$ power cords and interconnects--that horse has been beaten to death, buried and resurrected too many times. If the manufacturer used those cords, they must be sufficient to meet the amplifier current demand. Could you get a benefit from larger gauge wiring and better isolation/insulation--probably--but that is strictly up to you--you are in no danger of burning down the house with the stock cords if they are intact/undamaged.

As already mentioned, the Kappa X.1 models are much less "demanding" than the original Kappa models--I have original Kappa 9's (the infamous "amp killers"), which drop below 1 ohm impedance at a couple points in the response curve, so you should be good to go with the Infinity/Onkyo combo, and they should adequately fill the room.

Have you looked at the size of the fuse wire, no wonder all the music gets stuck in there. You really must get a $150 6' cord for the poor thing, let them electrons free, and while you are at it draw little arrows on the new cord so they know where to go.
