Opinion on replacement power transformers for Quad II amplifiers?

Hi Folks, I have a blown power transformer on my Quad II amplifier. I was wondering what opinion you might have on replacing the bad power transformer with a non stock transformer, say with this Hammond ?http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond/272BX/?qs=/ha2pyFadug38lnNHHWXo95GyzgwlVCsgSi9bcN4cfE=
Have you noticed any audible difference?
My hope is that what ever replacement I go with it will fit in the original casing, I hate the idea of it looking like it was hacked..Thanks in advance, Ed

Keep in mind a transformer needs to be designed for potting WRT heat management. Hammond specifically advises against potting transformers sold as open frame or with end bells.

You might consider a custom wind where potting is a design parameter. A rewind is a possibility too although maybe costly. I went the rewind route on one of my QIIs in pre internet days but would probably look for a loose transformer or a "parts unit" on that auction place if faced with the same situation today.

Like Steve says I'd go with a rewind or pick up a unit online. Thing is if you only need the power transformer you could likely come close to breaking even if you part out the output transformer, chassis, and other parts.

Hi

Woodside Electronics in the UK used to offer new transformers to fit the can - don't know if they still do. Otherwise try Sowter.

The power transformer in the Quad II is the most anemic part of that amp.

Could you explain what the "potting WRT heat management" is about?

He means that it's ill-advised to stuff a transformer not designed for a potted enclosure into a potted enclosure, because the transformer may not be able to dissipate heat effectively.
