Opinions on Kg2's

Hello! I have a pair of Kg2's, and I'm looking for some input from the Klipsch crowd on these. I've never met anyone else that has this model, and my pair is the only pair I have ever heard.I thought they sounded wonderful, a little too "In your face" for more delicate or mellow recordings, but wonderful none the less. What is the thoughts on these from the Klipsch guys? :banana:

I had a pair back in '82 and really liked them. For a small speaker they really had a balanced sound, suprisingly nice bass. :yes: Came home from vacation in '91 and my entire system was fried by lightning! :tears:
 
...bought mine in 1989...loved them until I bought a pair of Heresys...passed on the "karma" to a buddy...mint condition and he is still enjoying them...thought they had plenty of bass until I moved up the line...Heresys, Quartets, Klipschorns... :D :banana: :music: :thmbsp: ...Bill
 
Birddog, I'd like to get over there to hear them someday through that Carver of yours...

Hopefully before you sell them. Any bites yet?
 
Not that I'm a Klipsch guy or anything and do have alot of respect for the brand...FWIW I owned a pair about a year ago and my impressions were:

Great sensitivity
Well built
Beautiful mids and treble
Bass - OK for two 8" poly's and a passive...but not nearly tight enough for me.
 
A very price dependent proposition. KG-4 prices have seemed to trend higher in the past year or so, possibly due to some positive comments over on the Klipsch forum. It's hard for me to consider paying $300 - 350 for a pair of KG-4's when RB-5's are going for around the same price these days. For my ear, the RB-5's are a special little speaker. Yes, the KG-4's are floor standers, and the RB-5's do best on stands, and the KG-4 is bassier. The RB-5's just, for me, have a wonderful balance and tone quality to them, and haven't done me wrong with any kind of music.

However, if you can get a good deal on the KG-4's, something south of $235, your've got a heck of a good speaker for the $$$ spent.
 
I have KG 2.2's and 2.5's.
They are completely different speakers.
Mine are front ported and do well against or close to a rear wall.
Yours have rear facing radiators. I think your set would take considerable thought on positioning to achieve the best sound. I have never had a listening area large enough to be able to place that design well enough into the room and meet the WAF.
Klipsch ran that driver layout all the way up the scale with the KG-4 and the Quartet and Forte.
Everyone knows that KG4 owners are some of the happiest people. You should think about adding a pair of 4's and a KG center channel.
Give them clean power. They are rather effiecient and will play very loud without distortion.

...interesting...when I bought my kg2s...I listened to kg4s...I didn't like them at all...preferred the kg2s and bought those...I recently picked up a pair of Quartets...WOW...if what people say about the Forte' is true I cannot imagine how good they are (based on their baby brother Quarts)...good luck and enjoy!

My Kg2's are part of the bedroom system,powered with a Pioneer SX-6.Bought from Kief's in Lawrence in '89.Same here,good balance :thmbsp: well built,but the tweeter seems to be too fragile for the overall speaker.But I think my son had a hand in frying them about 10 years ago.At the time,they were powered w/my Soundcraftsmen PM840.$20 each for the voicecoil assembly.You might play around with the distance from the wall and placement,but we all do that anyway.Might roll off the deep bass just a bit,and avoid clipping,but maybe I'm too cautious. I'm not parting with'em!
 
Thanks for your opinions! Seems not too many people have these in their collection. I enjoyed mine when they were in use in my system, but they are out of rotation right now, the Mach II's are pulling duty at the moment...
 
Here's some info on the similarities on the Kg2 & Kg4:

1989 list prices were $339 each for Kg 4, $238 each for Kg2. Finish and grill color/material was optional

Frequency response was 38 - 20, +/- 3, but the SPL was 94 for Kg 4 & 90.5 for Kg2.

Crossover Freq was 1.8 k on each. I rotate the Kg 4's in my listening room occasionally and they are very enjoyable.

I've had the Kg2 in the past as rears in my surround system, although they do very well on their own. I also had two pairs of the Kg4s. Regretably I had to sell the Kg2s and one pair of Kg4s. I still have a pair of Kg4s that I'll never part with. The Kg2s are good for their size, but the Kg4s are so much better. I'm one of the happy KG4 members mentioned above.
I agree with whell, the price of Kg4 has gone up on ebay the past few years. I'm not surprised, but also disappointed because I recommend them to my friends. I'd like to have another pair, but can't justify it. One drawback is the K-8-K poly woofers are no longer manufactured. They have rubber surrounds, but I've seen cracks on others and hope I never have to replace them. I believe the fact I use them almost daily has kept the surrounds "active" and less prone to cracking and rot.
I paid around $400 for mine many years ago, but if you can still get them on ebay for less than $225 and they're in good condition buy them. You won't be sorry. However, if you do see a pair of the Kg4s for less than $275 you'll be even happier. The best finishes I've seen are the Oiled Oak and Walnut. I'm not a big fan of black speakers, unless it's a piano finish. I believe if speakers are going to be seen they should look good.
 
KG-3s & 4s vs Cornwalls

I began collecting Klipsch with a pair of KG-4s then got a deal on a pair of KG-3s. I was surprised how close the KG-3s came to the KG-4s. When I A/Bed them there was a difference but not much. The KG-3s actually have a slight edge in bass specs although the KG-4s sound tighter. I'd like to hear KG-2s. Does the smaller cabinet size color the bass sound?

I noticed huge differences when I A/Bed my KG-4s with a pair of 70's Cornwalls. I'm sure a large factor in the equation is the cabinet size and design. With no EQ the Cornwalls sounded "open", or maybe "transparent" whereas the KG-4s sounded like the sound was coming out of a tube. With EQ it is fairly easy to lose the constricted sound of the KGs.

I find I prefer the KG-3s & 4s for Rock-n-roll which is more often mixed down and mastered for mainstream speakers. But I somewhat regret having ever heard the Cornwalls since I am now ruined for reasonably sized speakers. (Don't bring up the subject with my girlfriend.)

Yes iam just hearing theses klispch kg2 with subwoofer chisalis I liked but maybe in a little large room sounds better .very s'nice sound they with about 250 to 300 us.iam listen for the first time .a litlle up front full sound.
 
Found a pair of KG2's recently on the side of the road with a free sign on them. Gave them to my girlfriend and she loves them. Very good sound from a small box and that's coming from an Altec guy.
