Opinions on TEAC X-1000r or TEAC X-2000r

I am purchasing a RTR deck this week. I have the option to purchase either a TEAC X-1000r or the X-2000r.
Both units are in excellent shape, mechanically and cosmetically, have the wood cases and been fully serviced
to operate to factory specs, etc, by an experienced tech. with a 90-day warranty. The price difference is small. I can afford either one. I have seen many on-line posts about both units, and at this point I am somewhat confused about which might be the better deck, or maybe it's simply subjective and either would be good. I have seen the issue discussed with the X-1000r is the heads are softer and more prone to wear out. The X-2000r is said to have bad head mounting which creates a poor contact with the tape. As I mentioned, both units have been fully serviced to factory specs, etc. I like the bias adjustment knob on the X-2000r and the reconfigurations. I believe the X-1000r only has a switch, but hear the mechanics are a bit better. I am told sonically they sound the same.
I mainly record classic rock from the 60's-70's, some from CD but most from vinyl. I need to decide in 2 days.
Any advice would be most appreciated. I intend on keeping this deck for many years and would like to make as informed and smart a decision as possible. Thanks!

Based on other techs experience (not mine, I'm not a tech, and have never owned either deck) the words I've read say that the X1000R design is a far better product in the way it is implemented than the X2000R design.

A quote I've saved from a forum in case I ever run into a situation like yours. "I can see some headaches ahead for this model (X2000). (Buy the) X1000R or X1000 deck as the X2000 models continue to prove to me- a past Teac Technician- that they are not even as good as the X1000 models that were their pre-runner."

I get the feeling the general consensus is the X-1000 is a better deck, but the X-2000 looks cooler.

Good luck with your decision!

I just purchased a couple X1000r's and both need belts. One decks heads are about out of spec and the other still has some time left. After further research, I wish I'd have passed because of things such as motors going out. It seems these are good decks after all troublesome parts are in great shape, but that's always subjective! I am wanting a Revox B77 to replace my A77 and thought I'd try the X1000R...we will see!

Thanks for the reply. The units I am looking at have both been professionally serviced- new belts, detailed cleaning and lubrication, full calibration, new rubber, etc. and come with a warranty. I believe that being the case, either unit will perform with excellent results. I am going to the service tech shop to try them both out.

I own two X1000r decks and am quite happy with them. Both have been fully serviced and perform flawlessly. In the past, I had toyed with the idea of trading one of them up to get an X2000r--fortunately, that idea has passed. From what I have read from posts by techs and speaking with my own tech, although the X2000r was the "big brother" to the X1000r, the X1000r was the better machine, so I stuck with what I already had. Also, factor in that the X2000r was basically at the very tail end of the R2R era, there aren't as many of them out there--and although the decks are very similar, they are not identical, so parts are far more plentiful (and cheaper) for the X1000r should you need something down the line.

Sounds like your in good shape. These decks look great and both decks I purchased are cosmetically great. I've communicated with a guy out of Chicago that restores Teacs, but I'm sure these decks are not cheap to ship. I'm hoping the belts are shipped soon so I can check these decks further!

Much appreciated with everyone's input. I went to the shop and checked them both out. The X-2000r was virtually unused- heads were flawless and machine spotlessly clean. We connected the deck up to several testing machines, oscilloscope, etc and ran it thru it's paces. freq. response, brakes, all functions were incredible- freq, response was better than spec'd. Tech's opinion was that the deck was used very little and sat in storage for probably decades. The X-1000r spec'd out beautiful as well. Both had nice condition, original cases. These units were restored by a certified 40 yr. TEAC/Tascam pro, who provided a warranty as well. He told me if I ever had any issues before/after warranty, he would repair them. Based on all that info, I selected the X-2000r. Took it home and set it up with my Vintage restored Marantz 2325 and Wow! This machine blew my socks off!! I am a firm believer if you have something vintage that has been restored and take care of it, it should provide many years of enjoyment and is a worthy investment.

Around 12 or 13 years ago, I purchased a nice X-1000R that had been owned and gone through by an enthusiast/tech guy. I am still impressed by the machine. You probably couldn`t have gone wrong with either deck. Happy listening !

Congrats on the new addition--sounds like you couldn't have gone wrong with either deck under the circumstances. I am a "hoarder" of spare parts--especially for something that is a "keeper" in my systems, so depending on your level of usage, you might want to keep an eye on a spare headstack and pinch rollers--they turn up on Eprey pretty much all the time, and will only get rarer (and more expensive) in years to come. Belts are no big deal--you can get them all over the place any day of the week.

Again--congrats and enjoy!!! :thumbsup::rockon:
