First let my say I don't own stock in either company, And am not a guy to through out much praise, For much of anything. It's something I'm working on. I've had the PS3 for about 2 years, And when websites say it is, Or was the king of HiDef playback they were right! Throw in killer gaming, Streaming, WiFi, It killed anything Samsung/Panisonic/Phillips could come up with, And for under $400(Now even cheaper). Now there is some competition with the BDP83. When I bought my first Flat Screen (Sony in 05) I needed something to make older DVD's look good on this new toy, Tried going the sub $100 route, With a cheap LG up converting player. Not good enough. Did some research and found Oppo's website, And was shocked at the awards these guys were pulling in on there HIDef picture technology. Every time they showed up at some audio/video convention, They scored big. I waited for the release of the DV981, As I read reviews of the DV971's audio issues, Although the video aspect won everything there is to win. The DV981's picture was mind blowing, And the audio issues had been dealt with, Both 2ch and 7.1. It's was the only player at the time to play 7.1 audio via HDMI. So customers began wondering, If they can do this to video for under $200, Where's the Blu Ray player. That things gonna kick ass if they ever do it. Well, They did finally do it, And got my piece the first week it hit there website, For $549. (It's now $499, Whats up with that?) Even for $549, You get a true universal player, Meaning it does it all, And trust me, I put it through hell daily. It's the main "Hub" of a Home Theater, And it does it's job well. So far I've sold the upconverting player, The PS3, And one CDP. As I hace dealt with this company before, The excellent packaging with the player in a nice velvet bag was not a surprise, Nor was the highly rated 3ft HDMI cable. Using the quick 6 step up was simple, And in about 20 minutes we were ready to try out some discs. I had my son standing by to get his take on picture quality, As he was positive his beloved Sony was going to "Blow this away". First thing we both noticed was the loading speed, From tray open, To image on the screen, Was faster than anything we've owned. By the time we went about 12FT to the couch, The movie was on. My wife timed 4 seconds for the sequence. A PS3 ain't even close. Picture was excellent as expected, Beating the Sony in one area, So called Edge Jaggy's, or movement on the edge off a close up image. The Oppo looked steadier, And color was slightly better. To settle the issue, We rented Ironman, To match our own copy, And wired up the PS3 to HDMI 2 and AB'd it to death for an hour or so. As time went by, It was apparent the Oppo picture got better after warm up was just sharper and steadier. It's not a world changing difference with a current Blu ray disc. Next we tried a newer common DVD "Gone In 60 Seconds" And it was no contest, The OD player won hands down, Not really a surprise, That what these guys do, And the PS3 was never expected to up convert in the first place. The BDP83 has a dedicated 2ch stereo power supply for audio, And sounded so good I sold one of my Marantz CD67's which had a few mods done. SACD/DVD-A playback was also great and trouble free. One area the Sony wins, Is streaming, Not gonna happen with the Oppo, But there is on board storage, You have to physically put it into the machine. Not a big issue for me, But could be if your computer is your main source of entertainment. All in all, A complete player, That does all thing well, Any audio/video media you can come up with, Simple to use, And at a pretty fair price for what you get, And what it does.

Big fan of both Oppo and my PS3, the real beauty of the PS3 IMHO is using it as a diskless player via PS3 Media Server.

I just started ripping my CDs to lossless Wavs using Exact Audio Copy then streaming them. Sounds fantastic!
 
You're right about Oppo, as they have been winning awards for a long time. The reviews on their audio sections has been universally positive.

When I buy a BluRay player, the Oppo it will be, as I need the audio out in stereo for my CD's and SACD's.

A winner for sure!!

I took the plunge and got a OPPO BDP83.

After reading so much about OPPO, including about their older stuff, I bought the BDP83.

It should arrive within the week.

Can't wait.

There's a reason why they seem to use the same chipset! Why anyone would buy Lexicon is beyond me.

The new Oppo BDP93 is a sweet machine but they shut out the ability to change regions even for DVD play-back. This may not be important to you but I kept the DV981 just for that as I do occasionally get disks from other places.
A simple remote hack does the trick.
 
I just got a second 83 last week, it came in a reusable shopping back not velvet and has a high quality 6ft HDMI cable not a 3ft. I also liked how the remote and cables were packaged in a nice silver embossed box with Oppo logo on it............touch of class you usually only find in more Esoteric gear and sometimes you dont get packaging as nice as the Oppo.
