Original Large Advent - tweeter issue

One of my 4 Advents has this bit of a problem. At times when I first fire things up the tweeter is out at
low volume. But when I turn the volume up it kicks on, then seems to be ok even at low volume.

Is the tweeter on the way out ? Or a crossover issue ?

If it is the tweeter I could easily get another one and pop it in myself. If it's anything else would have to have someone else look at it.

Any ideas ?

I recommend cap renewal before considering tweeter replacement.
The caps are 40-45 years old and more than likely out of spec. If so,
that will cause tweeters to act badly.

Someone also mentioned, and I had forgotten this, that it could be dirty contacts on the toggle switch in the back that is used to adjust the tweeter output level.

Much less common than dead or dying caps. They're like car wear items,
only on speakers.
 
There is a switch on the back for increase/decrease/normal tweeter level. I believe the switch contacts are dirty (all full of carbon) and giving you faulty contact(s). Some Deoxit-5 spray on the switch contacts may make the problem go away, or you may need a new DPDT switch. I do not believe its a cap problem.

I toggled the switch several times and it seems to be back now......so I guess I need to get in there and clean those contacts.
 
99% of fixing a problem is correctly ID'ing it. Them switches are a problem in many cases.

Sounds like your on your way to a fix.

BTW, sometimes a bunch of switch flipping will actually clean the contacts!
