Oscilloscope Lessons...

Very handy tool to check some components, like audio caps, besides using the VTM, put a square wave or sine wave through a cap and see if it is distorted or not. Have fun with it and play around with it to get the hands on experence you need, but stay away from the high voltage stuff for now.
Note: Discharge the larger electrolic caps used in power supplies, before doing any tests.
Read up on you manuals and get to know the scope very well and really understand the grounding method and safety precautions you need to use to test amplifiers and receivers that have to be tested with the power on.

I thought using a scope was to be able to "see" the input signal (sine or square wave) from input to output, and observe for distortion. Then trace back to the non working board or devise.
Can this be done with the unit off?

Hi Steelman. In order to see a signal the amp or device needs to be powered up.

BTW, I have two signal generators I got about a year ago. Two for the price of one. Cheap. If you pay the shipping, one of them are yours. I have two other S/G so don't need so many of them. It's small enough that the shipping would not be that much.

I know you could use the computer sound card and that's good for experimenting and learning to use an oscilloscope. Its just nice having a S/G.

PM coming your way!

Very cool way to do things, hang in there I have been trying this for he last 4 years or so..Make it fun it helps. I have a receiver on my bench now that has a weak Left channel..I get a lot of these, one channel works and the other one is weak.

Thanks,
John.:music::D

Thanks John :thmbsp:

I will post my learning process so maybe we can both learn how to utilize this beast :D

Youve been getting alot of support in your quest I see, I didnt read through all the posts, but heres a link if it already hasnt been supplied. If it turns out to be of any benefit at all then feel free to send a Dos Equis-O-Gram to me...Attn: Ken, Great White North .:D

Great link :thmbsp:

Gotta tell ya though, this is the exact post that seemed to confuse me (due to my inability to comprehend it without the basics :D ) and sell my TEK :D :D :D

I appreciate the heads up and looking out though :thmbsp:

Well if thats the case, then I guess I owe you a Dos Equis-a-Gram..I assume if I get it as far as the BQE or so, then you can receive it from there?

Hi, Can you use a actual audio source like a tape deck as your input audio source?

Thanks,
John.:music::D

Hey John,
Sorry, but nope. A tape deck (assuming it is playing your favorite music) will produce thousands of frequencies at once. You will not have any useful info from the display. It is cool to watch, but useless.
As to a frequency generator, all you need is one that will produce clean frequencies in the audible spectrum and produce maybe up to a couple of 3 volts output too.
So something that will vary from 0-20k should be good. Lots of kinds out there. just seasrch around and you will find them.
hope that helps

Thanks, yes it does. I now have a basic idea of what to get. I have a BK 1570A OS, I bought for a class that never got started. I have 100MHz leads for it?

Thanks for your help.
